She wasn’t able to tell her friend the truth because she felt guilty and embarrassed for borrowing an expensive necklace and not being able to look after it. When they replaced the old necklace, they had used all their money. Mathilde’s friend was considered someone from a higher class and Mathilde was afraid she might think she was a thief for giving a different necklace back. After purchasing the necklace Mathilde’s character had a dramatic change. She let go of your maid and did the entire house work on her own. Mathidle and her husband also gave up their apartment for a cheaper one. She was no longer living as a middle-class life, but instead a poor one. She gave up her lifestyle and lived one that she had never imagined nor wished for. As completing all the deeds her appearance seemed to look older than before. Although, she lived a poor lifestyle she gained an advantage of becoming a strong woman. Yet there will be days she would dream about the ball and how happy she was. Mathilde realized that, “life is such a strange thing with its changes and chances”. This all allowed for her thinking to change, specifically towards her appearance. This allowed her to develop into a more responsible and hardworking
