The Necklace
The short story titled “The Necklace” is about a man and his wife who is very greedy and wants more than what she needs. When she gets invited to a ball, she demands a new dress and a new necklace. She borrows a necklace from her friend which looks like it has “diamonds” on it and then loses it. She takes ten years to pay it back, only to find out that the diamonds on the necklace weren't real. The short story “The Fisherman and His Wife” is about a fisherman who finds an enchanted flounder, who he lets free. When he returns to his home, his wife demands that he wishes for a cottage. After that she keeps on wanting more and more until she demands of her husband to ask the enchanted flounder to make her the controller of the sun and moon. Once …show more content…
In paragraph 20, the following quote supports the theme. “‘Yes,’ said the man, ‘if this can only last we shall be very well contented.’” “‘We will see about that,’ said the wife.” This quote supports the theme because it shows that the wife does not appreciate what she just got and she wants more, though she does not need it and it won’t keep her happy. In “The Necklace” the author shows the theme through the characters in paragraph 2 in the following quote. “She suffered endlessly, feeling herself born for every delicacy and luxury.” This supports my theme because even though she has a better life than most, she still yearns to be rich and to be accepted by the higher class and that will never bring her joy. The actions of these characters express the theme because both of them want things that will not make them …show more content…
In the beginning of the story, the fisherman and his wife live in a hovel and don’t have a lot. When he crosses paths with an enchanted flounder, his wife forces him to wish for more and more power. “‘Well, wife, this is fine for you to be king! Now there is nothing more to wish for.’ ‘O husband!’ said the wife, seeming quite restless, ‘I am tired of this already. Go to your fish and tell him that now I am king and I wish to be emperor.’” (paragraph 54-55) This supports the theme because she keeps wanting more even though it will not make her happy because there is more that she will end up wanting and quite possibly getting. In “The Necklace” the author uses the plot to exemplify the theme. The story starts off with a man and his wife, and they get invited to a ball. She gets a new dress and isn’t satisfied with the jewellery she has, so she borrows a diamond necklace and loses it. She and her husband spends 36,000 francs to get a new necklace to replace the one that she lost. After this, she finds out that it was a fake. “‘Oh my poor Mathilde! But mine was an imitation. It was worth at the very most five hundred francs!’” (paragraph 119) This supports the theme because if the wife hadn’t been so greedy and unappreciative, she wouldn’t have been in the situation she was in. The plot of the story expresses the theme because they both rise up the social ladder, and then come flying down because

Theme- In poetry, fiction, or drama, the theme is the dominating idea in a work (Pearson 547). In Ha Jin’s An Entrepreneur’s Story, the theme seemed to be disappointment. All throughout the story the main character thought by having money, the perfect girl, and everything that came along with it would make him happy. The outcome of the situation with Manshan, his wealth, and the mother-in-law shows him that getting what he wanted didn’t make his life turn out to be any happier than he pictured (Pearson 265).…

In “A Worn Path”, the theme though out the story is about a strong undying love an old woman has for her grandchild. According to Clugston 2010, the theme in a story is associated with an idea that lies behind the story. Every story narrows a broad underlying idea, shapes it in a unique way, and makes the underlying idea concrete. That 's how theme is created. In other words, the theme in a story is a representation of the idea behind the story.…

You can read “The Necklace” as a story about greed, but this is also about pride. Mathilde Loisel is a very proud woman. She feels far above the humble circumstances and she is forced to live with her husband by her common birth. Her current situation disgusts her. She is also vain too, completely caught up in her own beauty. It is pride that prevents Mathilde from admitting they've lost an expensive necklace. After the loss of the necklace makes Mathilde poor, and her beauty fades, she may learn a pride of a different sort: pride in her own work and…

I agree that the writer’s goal was accomplish because through symbolism of a necklace, Maupassant was able to reveal the moral of the story. We see in the story that the main character who was obsessed with her look wasn’t satisfied with her life. She had a good husband who cared for her and did everything to make her happy. She did not see that. This can be applied to reality in the sense that we get caught up with what we look like or what we are wearing, that we go to lengths to make it happen. Through the symbol of a necklace, the author was able to convey to the readers the theme that vanity is worthless and there’s a price to pay for vanity and that we should be grateful for what we have.…

Another theme that is important in this story is beauty. Without beauty there is no love. That is insinuated throughout the book on how they found foot bounding beautiful. If your feet are not small or bound, then it will be hard for you to find love connecting back to the first theme, love. Beauty plays a major role in the story as Lily talks about marriage and how beauty and marriage coincide. Without beauty, it is hard for a girl to find the “perfect” husband. That is why I picked beauty as a major theme, because of how it is repeated throughout the story.…

In the story “The Necklace” the main character, Mathilda Losisel, is unhappily married to a clerk, and is ungrateful of the life she is living. She thinks that she deserves to be living a better lifestyle, and that materialistic objects and fancy things will make her happy rather than love. Mathilda is invited to the ball in the beginning of the story, and immediately she turns selfish and wants her husband to get the things she desires for her ball. Her husband tries everything he can to please his wife in every way that he could do to try to make her happy. Not once in the story did she say thank you for her husband’s efforts because she wasn’t thankful for what he had done for her. She also borrows an expensive necklace from one of her close friends. As she was partying away at the ball, she did not once think about her husband. She was more focused on the fact that other people were giving her attention. Later on in the story Mathilda loses the necklace, and her husband does everything he can to try to get it back. He ended up getting money to buy a brand new necklace, but had to pay off debts he had from raising that money by working it off and Mathilda has to work it off as well. Because of Mathilda’s greed and ignorance it had lead her to the situation of debt she was in. Throughout the story she only worried about herself rather than thinking about how much effort her husband was doing to making her happy. In the end the necklace turned out to…

A theme is the string that ties to entire story together. It is constant throughout the entire plot and connects the concepts to a bigger idea. However, the theme can do more than just that. Themes have the power to make a statement about a greater idea. It allows the story to be applied to some type of real world scenario. In “Mrs. Sen’s” by Jhumpa Lahiri the theme is able to be applied to a larger scenario regarding those who come to America from a foreign country. Lahiri is able to make a statement that is greater than the story. She uses Mrs. Sen to express to the reader what life can be like for an immigrant. Mrs. Sen must relearn how to live her daily life, which is and issue that many newcomers face.…

Another thing that theme expresses in the book is through the conflict."Stay gold,Ponyboy, stay gold." This means that even though many people may put you down you still have to be at your best. Never let anyone put you down always look at the bright side. Another saying from the story is" It’s okay… We aren’t in the same class. Just don’t forget that some of us watch the sunset too." This means that many people may be different but it is the sme everywhere. The conflict shows the theme too.…

The purpose of the theme of a story is to provide insight to the reader about the author's point-of-view on the topic they chose to write about. Theme can be communicated in two ways, both of which Ms. Kimenye utilized. One is to reveal the theme directly through a statement that a character makes, and the other is to allow the reader to interpret the theme based on the actions and reactions of the characters. She relates money and happiness throughout the story to convey her theme. Her use of description through the characters stressed her point very clearly. She used the right symbols, such as people, in the proper way to help the reader understand the purpose and meaning of the symbol. Overall, the way she incorporated the theme into the story could be considered to range from good to excellent.…

I have a few reasons why I feel like the theme of the story is freedom. “But now therewas a dull stare in her eyes, whose gave was fixed away of yonder on one of those patches of blue sky. It was not a glance of reflection, but rather indicated a suspension of intelligent thought.”. This is an example from the text showing that Mrs. Mallard realizes since her husband is gone, and now she is free.…
