Marijuana is known to some as a drug with unheralded possibilities. Believed to relieve the symptoms of glaucoma, promote eating as well as relieve the pain of cancer or AIDS patients, marijuana has caused a stir in its debate for legalization. Throughout the last few decades, the main focus of research has been placed on these and other potential benefits of medicinal marijuana whereas the public has focused on the addictive properties and recreational factors, but research has also taken place on the adverse reactions caused to the body’s immune system, respiratory system, and the brain from its long term use. Although marijuana 's active components are potentially effective in treating pain, nausea, and vomiting, marijuana has a negative effect on the human body. The Effects of Marijuana on the Immune System The immune system is responsible for protecting the body from numerous threats that can cause disease. The after effects caused from long term use to the immune and respiratory systems can worsen the medical conditions that marijuana is being used to help. The short, and sometimes long term effects on the brain can also create psychological problems or a false sense of well being, preventing the power of the mind to help heal the body and the spirit. In the end, people are responsible for their own well being, and the choice in using medicinal marijuana should be left to the individual once he or she has all the facts.
