Identity builds on the stereotypes for a group of people. Identity is the sets of different characteristics that may define a person. In different groups, these characteristics help classify them in subgroups. Italians, in New York, show a since of identity by their thick accented vernacular. White people in the South express their ethnicity through their culture. African Americans, just as other races, have many forms of identity within the different subgroups. Throughout these subgroups, they help exemplify what a nigga is. The style, vernacular, and the culture of African Americans are identities that classify the nigga in America.
African Americans have a certain style that is a part of their identity. Because of their trendsetting mindset, African Americans have been a part of the fashion world. Even though some of the trends have bad connotations, it is still a part of the black community. Because of the constant trips to the penitentiary, one of the fashion trends are the baggy pants. In jail this is a homosexual symbol of availability. When rap icons started wearing baggy clothing, they also made wearing chains popular. Because of the ignorance, niggas wore the baggy pants without knowing the origin of the style. The chains do not have as bad of a connotation as the baggy pants. The chain is a simple accessory that can be affordable. If a person was to wear this type of clothing, they will be characterized as a nigga.

With the word “nigga”, which is a degrading term, is used within the black community as a term of endearment. If the term is being used by a white person it becomes a racial slur.
