the night circus
Katie Hart
Mr. C speech 27 january, 2014
Reflection
One of the things we talked about in our group was about Baileys significance in the story. We could not find any real reason that he was there except to add another view point of the circus in the story. Bailey's had his own side story in the book which made the story more real. The second thing that we also discussed was what happened in the story so far. We talked about how the book, “The Night Circus”, is a fairytale most likely set in the Victorian Era . The description of the way the characters talked, the scenery, clothing described as long dresses that went down to the ankle worn with gloves, and the girls hair was styled up in a bun all gave a old time feeling.
The book mostly takes place at a magical night circus, which is only open to the public from sunset to sunrise. But we recently learned that the circus also serves a different purpose other than entertainment. Also we learned that the game has begun since Marco figured out that Celia is his opponent. But we have no idea if Celia knows if Marco is her opponent. I thought she does but i'm not sure, because when Marco first saw Celia he felt the mark on his finger (where the ring was ) burn so that made me think “then wouldn't she know too ?” But she never showed any feeling of pain when she was auditioning for the circus .
The third question we talked about was, “Is Isobel and Celia the same person?” We soon found out they are definitely two different people and that there could possibly be a love triangle later on in the story. The fourth question we discussed was “What was your favorite part of the circus?” I personally thought my favorite part was the ever-changing sections and different routines they had in the circus as well as the whole magical feeling it gave in the story that Erin Morgenstern beautifully wrote and described .

Since the tale did not meet Harry Bailey’s expectations, yet is riddled with sexual connotations, he “…is disappointed in the tale told, which arouses anticipation but offers no satisfaction in deed” (401). Even pilgrim Chaucer makes note of Harry Bailey’s lack of satisfaction but promises to perform better, “I wol yow telle a litel thyng in prose / That oghte liken yow, as I suppose, / Or ells, certes, ye been to daungerous” (Chaucer 937-939). This clearly goes against societal norms since Harry Bailey portrays himself as a heterosexual…

Six well-educated Confederate veterans from Pulaski, Tennessee created the original Ku Klux Klan on December 24, 1865, during the Reconstruction of the South after the Civil War.[32][33] The name was formed by combining the Greek kyklos (κύκλος, circle) with clan.[34] The group was known for a short time as the "Kuklux Clan". The Ku Klux Klan was one among a number of secret, oath-bound organizations using violence, including the Southern Cross in New Orleans (1865) and the Knights of the White Camelia (1867) in Louisiana.[35]…

In 1492, Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World; the 1893 Chicago World’s Exposition was a commemoration of the 400th anniversary of his ‘discovery’ of the New World (the Americas). After winning hosting rights, Chicago used the fair to show the world that it had risen from the ashes of the devastating 1871 Great Chicago Fire. Jackson Park served as the six-month exposition’s venue and Daniel Burnham was the lead architect that supervised the design and planning of the exposition’s major buildings. These temporary neoclassical “buildings that were made from wood frame wrapped In staff, a plaster mixture that gave the illusion of stone” were referred to as the White City because they were painted white (Bolotin et al. ……..).…

“Nobody seems to know how television is going to affect radio, movies, love, housekeeping, or the church, but it has definitely revived vaudeville” (thinkexist.com). Edgar Bergen’s statement concisely describes how vaudeville has returned in the modern era. It is ironic that television, which was partly responsible for the disappearance of vaudeville in its original form, has now played a role in the return of vaudeville. However, many television viewers do not realize this because vaudeville was popular nearly a century ago. Modern viewers may not even be aware that such a thing as vaudeville ever existed. Nevertheless, vaudeville was one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the United States after the Civil War and into the early twentieth century. Despite meeting its downfall as a result of the rise of cinema and radio, vaudeville has returned to modern viewers in the form of sketch-comedy television.…

The next similarity between the Night Circus and the Harry Potter series is that both had teachers. In the Night Circus, it would be the father’s who would train the students for the challenges. In the Harry Potter series, they were sent to Hogwarts that had professors to be trained to be a magician. All the students had lessons of some kind, it just depended on the teacher’s personality on how it was delivered.…
