This novel is known for being a poetic novel. Different major events had happened, throughout the novel, but not all detail was written. Like in Sebastian’s death, how Lucy found out about his death, as well Lucy’s death. Sebastian’s death is read about in a newspaper article by Auerbach. As a reader, we get just a small part of what the witness saw. There is no mention about Sebastian thoughts at that time of the event. In the article about the accident, it states that “Mockford could not swim and was terrified; he had locked his arms about Sebastian’s neck…Mockford must have fastened himself to his companion with a strangle-hold and dragged him down.” (Lucy 116-117) As one, reading this part there can be a way it can read that they did struggle in the water. As others, can pick up from previous passages and close reading that it can be seen that there was a possibility that Mockford was struggling and trying to push him down. Mockford could have done it out of jealousy or the fact that his time working under him was slowly coming to an end. But Cather just lets it be and doesn’t mention anything else, which let the reader imagine the outcome on how they interpret the passages. Lucy got very close to Sebastian over the time. She had a hard time when she found out that he would be leaving for months. When we read about the death of Sebastian, there is no mention of her true feelings.
