Two of the prototypes were made available to the public for purchases as "development kits". Dk1 was made available in the late 2012 while Dk2 were available in the mid 2014. The purposed of the released of the prototype were to give developers a chance to develop content in time for the Rift's release. However, the two prototypes were purchased by a large number of enthusiasts who wished to get an early of the technology.
Samsung Gear VR is a mobile virtual reality device which was developed by Samsung Electronics in collaboration with Oculus VR. The Gear VR is a unit itself which contains the high field of view lenses as well as a custom Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) for rotational tracking. The Gear VR will be connected to a smartphone via micro-USB. The smartphone must be a compatible Samsung Galaxy device that acts as the headset's display and processer. The Gear VR also includes a touchpad and back button on the side. There is also a proximity sensor to detect when the headset is
