a) The organizational structure of Bit o’ Fizz is a functional structure that consists of each employees interacting with those in their department. The company’s president, R. Simpson believes that the only time employees need to interact with each other is during formal meetings. The organizational structure is appropriate for this firm because each position has a specific task they need to fulfill. Using a functional structure keeps a company organized by having skills focussed on specific problems. It’s important for each subunit to focus on their task and when there’s a problem, they know earthly who to report it to.
b) The problem with Bit o’ Fizz’s organization
structure is the lack of communication with each other. Employees feel a lack of responsibility for problems that don’t occur in their department. Because of this formal structure, employees tend to only focus on their specific task and everything else around them should be dealt with by workers in the other departments. For example, T. Ohura did a research report and sent it to P. Robinson who sent it to J. Tabor and he put it on R. Metha’s desk. R. Metha didn’t review the report because based on the organizational structure it is not her job to handle it, it was J. Tabor’s duty. This organizational structure caused a missed opportunity in this company because of the lack of responsibility and care each member has for problems outside of their department. Bit o’ Fizz needs to better consult with their co workers and show motivation in their work so problems like this don’t happen again.
c) Source of Authority: Bit o’ Fizz is a mechanistic structure because the source of authority and decisions are centralized by those who have higher hierarchy. This doesn’t empower workers instead it belittle those who likes to express their self.
Number of Rules and Procedures: There are specific rules and procedures that need to be followed in each subunit. Bit o’ Fizz departments have specific task that each employee are obligated to fulfill.
Span of Control: In the hierarchy for Bit o’ Fizz, there isn’t a span of control for any of the workers; instead they rely on the manager’s commands. For example, the factory workers must follow the orders the floor supervisors give them. They rely on the manager’s directions, this decreases individual’s authority.
Execution of Tasks: In mechanistic structure, each task is to be followed specifically. In the Bit o’ Fizz Company this decreases the communication skills and flexibility with the other departments.
Nature of Teams: Bit o’ Fizz mainly focuses on specific duties that need to be followed in each department. Unlike organic structure, this is not a team work based company. Every division is obligated to follow directions from their managers.
Nature of Co-ordination: Mechanistic organizations provide only a formal co-ordination among divisions. In Bit o’ Fizz, the only time employees in other departments are able to socialize with each other is during formal meetings, this is a less opportunity to collaborate with other departments.
d) Bit o’ Fizz might benefit with divisional structure because working in a geographic area helps to cover the various types of product or market areas. Matrix structure can help the company because of the mix of functional and divisional structure all in one organization. Bit o’ Fizz can benefit this because it improves the communication and co-operation of each department. The benefits of hybrid structure are the combination of functional structure and divisional structure. This structure might help with the creativity and competitive aspect that might avoid any missed opportunity with Bit o’ Fizz.
