In the beginning of the story, the main character sells cheap newspapers. The main character meets Evangeline while walking to sell newspapers, even though he noticed her at his school before. Evangeline immediately approaches the main character when she first sees him and says hello. The main character says hello back, and then Evangeline immediately asks him for a newspaper just to start a conversation. This is a sign that she only asks him for a newspaper to start a conversation and be friends with him. “On Friday night of the first week, she gave me a dime, the cost of the paper. It was a poor paper, by the way.” (Stafford, William) Page 493 The Osage Orange Tree. Throughout the story, Evangeline and the main character would meet almost every evening and Evangeline would pay the main character for the paper. At first, Evangeline told the main character that her father was giving her the money for the papers. What she was actually doing was using the money that was supposed to be for her graduation and using it on the newspapers. She needed money for her graduation to buy a nice dress, so she tried to steal the money from her bank to buy a new dress. Unfortunately, she was caught stealing and wasn’t allowed to go to her graduation. "Evangeline couldn't come," her brother said. He stopped, looked at me again, and said, "She stole." (Stafford, William) Page 495 The Osage Orange Tree. Evangeline did all of this just to have one friend. After the graduation, the main character had to move. He went to Evangeline’s house, but she was not there. After that, he went to the place where they usually met, and found all the newspapers that he had ever sold Evangeline. “There they were - a pile of boxed newspapers, thrown in a heap, some new, some worn and weathered, by rain, by snow.” (Stafford, William) Page 496 The Osage Orange Tree. This means that Evangeline kept all of the newspapers that the main character ever gave her, and never even read them.
In the story, Evangeline bought newspapers from the main character and used that as an excuse to talk with him. She wanted to have a friend so badly because she didn’t have any friends, and she felt like she was alone in life. At the end of the story, the main character thought of Evangeline, so what Evangeline did to have a friend worked.

Another feminist aspect Ruth obtains is her protesting. A devoted traditionalist, Ruth defends the tribal ways of the A'tsika people and heavily protests Dwight and the corrupt councilmen when they accept a deal from the Japanese to kill a whale and try to cover it up by saying the whale killing will be returning them back to tradition, or as Dimitri said "will bring us back to ourselves" (Hogan 69). Even when the men invade and destroy her property, she persists in trying to get them to not go through with the whale killing. "Ruth continued her stand against them. She picketed meetings. She wrote letters. Even Thomas, she realized with her broken heart, only came home to strengthen his identiy, to reach for something lost, to join the whaling crew" (Hogan 82). Ruth developed into a strong, self-possessed woman and represents a figure of second wave feminism through her outspokenness and active protests for social change in her community.. Although both woman are different from one and other, Emi also carries feminist aspects similar to Ruth. Emi’s over sexual demeanor…

Friend looked up at her from his car and said, “Gonna get you baby” (Introduction to Literature 485). She thought nothing of the event and just kept going on with her friend. A short time later in the story, while Connie was sun bathing and listening to music, Friend shows up at her house. The first thing to shoot through Connie’s brain was her wondering how bad she looked. There is something wrong with that picture, that there was a stranger at her door that literally told her that he is going to get her. Most normal teens would be afraid of this kind of behavior and probably report it, not Connie. Friend starts talking about how he wants her to come with him, and bribing her with the music that he knew she loved. With his smooth talk, Friend tells her “I know my Connie”…”I took a special interest in you, such a pretty young girl, and found out all about you like I know your parents and sister are gone somewheres, and I know who you were with last night, and your best girl friend’s name is Betty. Right?” (Introduction to Literature 488). Friend goes on in detail about all of the things he knows about Connie and as he does this, Connie starts to panic. The harsh realization that she is only fifteen and that she isn’t really experienced or old enough to know what to do in this kind of situation. She then went inside to be protected by the screen door.…
