In the book, there are lots of details. The setting and background story are very well explained. There are also multiple mentions of Pony being on the track team. There are also mentions of Sandy, Soda’s girlfriend, and his relationship with her. The book also has a lot of details at the movie theater scene that lasts for almost two whole chapters. …show more content…
Both of which are very detailed as Pony explains to Cherry basically about his whole life. When Pony goes home, he was slapped by Darry, and runs to the vacant lot. The book continues after that to the scene where the Socs try to drown Pony, and Johnny kills Bob the soc. All of which takes a very long time to explain exactly what is happening. The fire scene that takes place at the church in Windrixville is very dramatic, and well explained. On the way to the hospital, the man with Pony in the ambulance tells Pony that the kids were ok, just a little bit startled by the loud explosion sounds that came from the church a few minutes after they were rescued. Once Pony is back at home, Two-bit runs in while Pony is making eggs, and engulfs him in a hug, and sends the eggs flying onto the clock. Dally mentions threatening a nurse with a switchblade to get out of the hospital. When Pony and Dally go down to the hospital after the rumble to go see Johnny the scene had very little drama. Dally hit the wall once, and ran out the door. Dally’s death scene is also has very little drama because they greasers go try to rescue him, Dally pulls out an unloaded gun, and the police shoot him. The book also has an entire scene when Pony’s English teacher tells Pony to write a Theme.
The movie starts off as Dally, Pony, and Johnny are walking to the movie theater. There is a scene where Bob and Randy are argueing with Cherry and Marcia about them sopost to be their girl friends. The movie is not deeply detailed, and emotion is not well portrayed. Pony also has a flashback about the death of his parents. There are multiple scenes that take place at the Curtis house. One of which shows Two-Bit watching Mickey Mouse on television. The Hospital scene is very detailed, and has multiple images that demonstrate the how badly Johnny was burned in the church fire. As Dally runs into the rumble, he does not explain to Ponny how he got out of the hospital. After Johnny dies, Dally has a huge reaction. He runs to the front of the hospital, and points an unloaded gun at a doctor. He is then shot by a store clerk, and runs to the vacant lot. There he has a very dramatic death, where he is shot multiple times, and then slowly dies.
Although there are some differences, the book and the movie are very similar.
To begin, Cherry has the same conversation with pony where she says that things are rough on both sides of the city. A lot of the dialog in the movie is word for word with the book. Pony and Darry also both make it the church in Windrixville, and cut and dye their hair. Pony and Johnny later go back into the church to rescue kids from the fire. Two-Bit also makes a comment about how darry would be a soc if it weren't for The gang. Pony also has the same conversation with Randy about how he doesn't want to fight in the rumble. As the greasers prepare for the rumble, Darry expresses concern about how Pony didn't look well, and should not fight in the rumble. Darry also wears the same shirt that shows off all of his muscles. After the rumble, Dally and Pony are escorted to the hospital by the motorcycle police officer. Just before Johnny dies, he tells Pony to stay
gold.
Overall, the movie relates very well to the book with minimal differences and lots of similarities. The book is well written, and the movie is well directed. Together, they portray the story of the greasers very well.
