The Outsiders Book Report

The book i read was “ The Outsiders” by S.E. hinton. The protagonist was Ponyboy Curtis, a fourteen year old greaser, with long greasy hair. He wears jeans, t-shirts and a leather jacket. Ponyboy liked his gang , school , sunsets , movies , reading and his best friend johnny. He hated the Socs because they were the rich kids with all the breaks and his brother Darry because he bossed him around after his parents died. Greasers were the tough poor kids. Ponyboy changed in many ways throughout the book. Ponyboy was no longer young and innocent after a stabbing took place between the greasers and the Socs. In the middle of the night, Ponyboy and Johnny were surprise in the park by a group of drunkens Socs who were looking for a fight because they were talking with the Socs girls.Because Ponyboy was getting drowned, Johnny took out his switchblade and stabbed Bob. After this point Ponyboy and Johnny were no longer young and innocent. Johnny and Ponyboy had killed a human being. No one would be the same after they killed someone. The innocence of childhood was gone forever.
Ponyboy changed his feelings toward his older brother Darry throughout the story.
Ponyboy’s parents were out on a picnic when their car with them in it was demolished by a huge locomotive. His older brother darry became his guardian and was his older brother and father. It was difficult for him to understand why his brother was how being so strict with him and ordering him around. Pony really believed darry hated him. “ everything was good until mom and dad died now he hates me”. During his time at the church Ponyboy had time to figure out his brothers intentions and finally realized Darry was just trying to keep him out of a boys home. Darry had to prove that he could be tough with Ponyboy and Ponyboy had to understand that he still loved
him. Ponyboy changed his attitude towards the Socs. In the beginning of the story, he hated them because they were the rich kids with all the breaks. After the stabbing , he really hated the Socs because they tried to drown and kill him. As he spent time in the abandoned church , he began to think how awful a Soc was dead. Ponyboy’s thoughts changed to how we get along. In the end he was actually sat in a Soc car and talked to Randy without fighting or calling eachother names. He would never have done that at the beginning of the story. Ponyboy realized in the end that it was better to get along rather than fight and cause more death. In conclusion, Ponyboy changed throughout the story. He was involved in a stabbing that killed a human being and therefore he was no longer young and innocent. He finally understood Darry’s intentions to protect him from going to a boy’s home. Finally , and most important he changed his views on the Socs and realized they have to stop fighting. In order to live in peace, he finally understood , “ Greasers will always be Greasers and Socs will always be Socs” but we have to get along.
