The Panama Canal has history that goes all the way back to the 16th century. Once seeing all of the riches and counting up the time it took to reach the ports of Spain, it was time some one came up with a short cut. It was suggested to be a cutting of land somewhere in Panama. This canal would help for shorter and safer trips to Spain. This took a lot of time and consideration. In 1901, after the assassination of McKinley, Roosevelt became president. He believed in the canal as it would serve as US military and have economic interests.
The Columbian government refused to sell and released the land but in 1903, Panamanians revolted against the government. In return of this, the US was allowed to release the land for the canal zone and construction began in 1905 and ended in 1914.
The Panama Canal was approximately 51 miles and connected with Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. The Panama Canal was constructed in two stages. The first was between 1881 and 1888 and the second was between 1904 and 1914. The contract for the canals construction was signed on March 12, 1881 but couldn't become bind until two years had came. Time flew by and it was time to work.
Traffic moves through the Panama Canal vigorously. Many oil supertankers, military battleships, and aircraft carriers can not fit through the canal. Ships passing through the canal automatically move through with no problem. It takes approximately fifteen hours to traverse the canal through its three sets of locks. The ships moved from the northwest to the southeast. The Panama Canal was a very busy canal.
In 2007 of September, work began to expand the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal is expected to be complete in 2014. The Panama expansion will allow ships double their size to pass through the canal increasing the amount of goods and riches that can pass through the canal. I would like to visit the Panama Canal and see its new expansion in 2014. I know it would be a beautiful site to
