The Paramedics: A Short Story
One day, in June, I was at tumbling class. It was about 80 degrees and sunny. It smells like sweat, but I'm used to it. An old, dingy and torn apart gym. A drop of sweat comes down my face and I got an idea. A dumb idea. Everything was going great until something vile happened, something that I will never forget.

I was in line waiting for my turn, and I decided to go off to the side and practice one of my own tricks. Then BOOM, I broke my arm, I couldn't explain how fast it went.

My coach came rushing over, and he started calling an ambulance. Once the ambulance came, the paramedics came over. They asked me what's my name and what's my phone number and my address and BLAH BLAH BLAH, I'm sure they were just checking if I didn't forget anything that tragic. Soon my mom came, and sooner the paramedics drove me over to the hospital. They figured out it wasn't threatening, but I thought it was. They gave me some medicine to make me feel better, but it didn't make it better.

Once we got to the hospital, they opened the ambulance and rolled me out. The paramedics traded me

Finally they put the IV in my arm and pumped the medicine in. I soon felt weak and BAM I'm put to sleep. When I was out, I had this crazy dream. It was mixed with me falling into the bottom of the world, me breaking my arm at that moment, and the hospital. Crazy. It was about 10 minutes I was sleeping, but felt like 2 minutes. As soon as I wake up, they already put the big cast on. I did NOT like having a broken arm. When I am fully awake, they ask me for some apple juice. I say sure because I haven't had a drink in 6 hours. Once we start to leave, they wheel me in a wheelchair. Only because I might not be stable enough from all the medicine I had. On our way home, my mom talks about how she felt and by that she means that she feels horrible. But I also feel terrible for me

The ER waiting room smelled stale. Sick babies and toddlers were crying, waiting to see a doctor. My brother was laying on the tan tiled hospital floor. He was shaking terribly as the antibiotics from the previous hospital wore off and the infection set in more. Both of his hands were red and swollen. His right hand, had a black mark from where the IV initially infected. His left hand was swollen to the size of a small balloon, kind of like a blown up rubber glove I used to get from the doctor when I was younger. My mom took her jacket off to cover him. His skin was hot to the touch but he was still freezing. His fever was 101.2 but there were no open rooms in the ER at our second attempt at a hospital. We had to get him antibiotics…

My mom and my step dad were talking about something and my mom said that I told her that I wasn't feeling good so I went upstairs in my mom's room. All I remembered was lying down and then all of the sudden just blacked out. From what my step dad and my mom saw was worse. My step dad was going to the room to get something when he saw me at the edge of the bed with my eyes rolled back and I was shaking like crazy. He yelled my mom's name and she rushed up the stairs, when she got there she said that I just looked passed out and she picked up my body and head off the ground and kept calling my name she said that I was squinting and trying to say yes. My step dad called the ambulance and they came. When I got to the hospital they ran tests on me to see what was going on. They told my mom it was meningitis. That week was the most horrible week of my life. I was having headaches, throwing up constantly, drowsiness, pain in my body etc., but it was thankfully the virus one and…

Well, as fate would have it, Nick ran into me. The momentum he had on impact, caused me to fall forward, right into a brick wall. I remember the pain running through my arms and face, but nothing hurt as badly as my lip. My first grade teacher came out, and she helped me to the nurse. The nurse called my mother, and told her that I had to go to the hospital. Before my mother got to the school, although she was driving pretty fast, I got to look in the mirror. My upper lip was split open, and did not look pretty. It was bleeding excessively when my mother got to the school. She quickly got me into the car, and we drove off.…

Swiftly, I made sure everyone did their job and helped move one person to triage station. After getting over the initial shock, I thought everything was well as I made sure everyone calmed down and treat and move critical patients to the triage area to be processed. The commander finally appointed me a position as the transportation officer and resumed command, which I have to admit, sadly gave up. I was still glad to do something vital as we got the last patients out of incident scene and left the scene of incident after thirty minutes of crazy, uncontrolled…

When they got to me, my dad picked me up and carried me to the car. We got in and he drove me home. Then he helped me get out of the car. The pain was so bad I had to hop to the door. I woke up maybe four hours later, I was still pretty groggy. My mom came in and gave me my medicine and told me that Friday which was in three days I had to go to physical therapy. I was dreading Friday, I didn't wanna go, I was super scared and nervous at the same time. Prior to my surgery, I went to P.T for a couple months to strengthen my knee because it was really weak from me not using it and being in a brace. When Friday rolled around I had to be there around eleven thirty. I still couldn't do much, and crutches were hard to use because I was really tired from being in pain, and laying in bed just doing…

In seventh grade I wanted to tryout for volleyball. I was very nervous because I had never played it before. I was super happy when I found out all my friends and I made the team. We had a lot of practices in December to get ready for games in January. I was really nervous for our first game. Our first game was supposed to be right after christmas break ended, but we had a snow day so it was cancelled. I wished it hadn’t been so I could just get it over with, but i was gonna have to wait. We were scheduled for another game later that week. I woke up with a phone ringing and an answering machine saying that school was cancelled due to boiler issues. I sat in bed thinking I had once again gotten lucky and we had no game, I was wrong. We were…

They began discussing how to get him to the gurney. They talked about taking out my bedroom window as they could not maneuver the gurney into my bedroom they would just lift him out the window. They had started an IV to bring up his blood pressure as it had dropped drastically to around 55 over 40. He started to perk up enough he could walk to the hallway to the gurney and there was no need to take out my window. I was grateful, not that my father was not worth it but what a mess that would be in a block house. They loaded up my dad and off they went, I followed in my…

We stepped out into the night and drove to the hospital. Once we got there, the nurse asked me a bunch of questions. From 1-10, 10 being the worst, how much does it hurt? How did this happen? Oh yeah, I thought. I never really thought out how this all happened. So I guess it went like this: I sat on the couch, about to watch a movie. When I sat down, I sat on a broken piece of plastic. Then, my elbow started bleeding really bad, but the pain was worse Finally, I ended up at the hospital. After all of the questions, the nurse took me into a small room with my brothers and my dad. The room had a chair, a sink, and worst of all, a tray full of needles. I hated needles. I’ve already experienced what felt like a knife in my elbow, I can’t handle a needle now, I thought. When the doctor came in, she told me I needed 5 stitches. Great, now I need stitches! This day couldn’t get any worse, I thought. First, she stuck about 12 needles in my elbow to numb it. With every single shot, I squeezed my eyes shut, gripped my dad’s hand, and inhaled sharply. Then, she took a black, plastic thread, and began sewing my elbow together. I still remember my pink and white striped shirt, and my brand new blue shorts that were covered with tiny drips of blood. I looked away the whole time the doctor was stitching up my elbow, but by the look on my dad’s face, it definitely wasn’t pretty. All I felt was the tugging on my arm. After what felt like an eternity, she finally made a few knots at the end of the stitch. My brother took a picture and showed me. Eww, it looks like spiders, I…

My heavy eyelids have a hard time opening, I force them open and find myself in a hospital bed wearing one of those dresses I promised myself I’d never wear. My very own nurse rushes in once I’m awake. She tries her…
