To fully understand how such an amazing structure could have been built so long ago and its significance in history, it is important to understand the culture in Athens at the time. They worshipped the Greek Gods. They made temples for their gods; The Parthenon is the temple for Athena, one of the goddesses. Some of the major Gods were Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades.
Treatment of Women in Athens was very standard for these times. Women were not regarded as citizens. They could not vote, own property etc. They were owned by males such as brothers, fathers, and husbands. Women primarily didn’t have roles outside of the home.
Education was a big factor in the people’s ability to develop and complete a project like the Parthenon. Before the 5th century B.C., building techniques were developed, and from the 7th century B.C., architectural orders developed and these architects were amazing builders. Schools existed from the end of the 6th century B.C. evidence of literacy occurs in 506 B.C. However in 5th century B.C., there was no set system of higher education, but education expanded during this time. Richer families continued to educate their son’s until they turned 18.
