The American Health Care system has been the subject of many political stances since the early 19th Century. Within the last 5 years, the view of providing proper health reform has been delivered in many different forms. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act also known as “ObamaCare” or ACA is a national health care plan aimed at reforming the American health care system. The new healthcare reform bill provides millions of Americans with option regarding their health care coverage. The new bill includes but not limited to eliminating pre- existing conditions and gender discrimination meaning, increased protection for women health services, and allows children to stay under their parent’s insurance coverage until age twenty- six. A newborn named Houston was born on March 15, 2013, suffered from a defect in his arteries. The congenital heart defect causes the two major vessels that carry blood away from the heart to become switched. When his parents applied to have corrective surgery covered under their insurance, they were denied. The insurance’s reason for denial claimed Houston had a pre- existing condition. With the ACA, being sick will not prohibit an individual from getting health coverage because they are sick. An insurance company cannot turn down or charge an individual more because of his or her condition. Once you get insurance, there cannot be a refusal to cover treatment and coverage for pre-existing conditions begin immediately.
