The Patriot The film The Patriot directed by Roland Emmerich follows Benjamin Martin, a hero of the French and Indian War, and his service in the American Revolution fighting against the British. The Patriot is a film that romanticizes the fact that freedom is not free. The intended purpose of the film is to make Americans and those who fought for freedom to feel good about their country. In fact, freedom is a continuous theme in the movie from start to finish. This can be seen at the start of the movie when Benjamin Martin’s son, Gabriel was excited to go to war and stated “I’m fighting for freedom …” Another theme continuously shown in the film is revenge. Numerous intentions in the film was fueled by revenge. For example, when one of Martin’s son died trying to save Gabriel, this event fueled Martin to
William Tavington closely resembles General Banastre Tarleton, but in the movie Tavington is shown as a bloodthirsty killer and exaggerates the horrible deeds of Banastre Tarleton. General Banastre Tarleton was a “cool and efficient soldier who excelled at tracking and neutralizing rebel factions” (Thomsen). In addition, the movie presents every American in a positive manner, while the British were presented in an unfavorable manner. In conclusion, The Patriot is a film that audience can learn a little bit of history from. To keep in mind that this film was produced for entertainment purposes with some historical accuracy sprinkled in. If the movie was solely based on historical accuracy, the movie itself would probably not be as popular as it is today. Also, the events in the movie would probably not be as exaggerated and as biased as it is. Although, the movie does make the audience or Americans feel like they should be proud of their country and take pride in the freedom they have
