Maktub is a simple yet memorable phrase that has contributed to Santiago’s pursuit of his Personal Legend. It is a simple phrase that allows Santiago to understand that everyone is created by the same hand and that there is a universal language that could be understood without the need for words. Maktub evokes a theory that God has a plan for all living things; that everything happens for a specific reason. Often “we are afraid of losing what we have, whether it‘s our life or our possessions and property. But this fear evaporates when we understand that our life stories and the histories of the world were written by the same hand” (Coelho 78). It becomes evident that with the presence of God in Santiago’s life, he is comforted with the knowledge that despite the suffering, God will not abandon him. He begins to understand that “all things are one” (Coelho 46) and somehow, all souls are intertwined and connected in a way that is unimaginable or that cannot be explained. A prominent…

The ending of a novel can be evaluated by the reader in several different ways, however to properly analyze the work is to further explore the logic of how everything has come to be. The ability of the author to show the reader that the ending is reasonable from the preceding action and the character’s nature is what should truly be examined. Not only is the ending of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz both happy and unhappy, it is logical in the sense that it follows logically from the climax of the novel all while the character’s have been constant throughout, except Oscar. Oscar, the protagonist experiences a life-changing transformation that leads to his untimely death. However, the ending is convincing because of this transformation and it is convincing that the novel would end the way it would. Diaz wrote this novel in a way that kept the reader captivated and interested because his logic can not be questioned.…

Music mysteriously connects with the human heart. It often speaks more than words, yet when words speak with music it greatly impacts the human heart. Is powerful because it’s medicinal for pains and balm for scars. A man once told me that a heart is unable to feel pain. However, my heart can prove that statement wrong. My heart can speak about the power of music combined with words. Not any words, but the words of God. His words can sink to the bottom of a human heart. Combining these two variables, the songs of “ Levanto Mis Manos” and “ Nada te Turbe” by Samuel Hernandez emerge. In this essay, music is not only enjoyable for the ears, but is medicine for inexplicable pain and a hopeless heart.…

Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold, is a compelling text about the marvels of human resources into collecting, recollecting and recording fragments of time through memory. The grandiloquent title resonates with tremendous bearings of the book’s concern with the nature of time and memory in an endeavour to reconstruct the past: Santiago’s death. As such, Chronicle of a Death Foretold operates on different dimensional levels at piecing together the subjective recollections of the townspeople, assembling factual evidences, eye-witness accounts and written testimony to assign meaning to the past, present and future.…
