The Perfect Date
No one will ever be able to experience the perfect date. It just isn’t realistic. Every time you go on a date, something almost always goes wrong. Whether it be an argument before, after or during, something will always interfere with that night or day being perfect. You can only dream about nothing going wrong. In simpler terms, The Perfect Date.
As him and I sat across from each other at the elegant dining table, I noticed all the lights were off. The only sliver of light was the flicker of 3 candles between us. These candles had been used quite often. I knew this because they were very short and had many drippings of wax down the sides. The flames were bright and long-standing. These beautiful candles reminded me of how worn down a relationship can get when you add other people to the relationship.
He laid his arm out across the table to hold my hand. As I laid my arms beside his, they brushed against the crotched table cloths. I held a piece of it between my index and thumb and felt roughness. They were soft but still had a scratchiness to them. While I played with the table cloth discreetly, I traced the outer edges of the ivory plate he had provided for me to eat off of. The plates were smooth and cold. The feeling sent shocks through my fingertips. These feelings made me feel warm and used to being there with him.
As we sat only a couple of feet from one another, I gazed at his features. Although his features were hard to distinguish with the candlelight, the candlelight outlined the parts of his face that were easily seen. The contour of his jaw bone was highlighted with the candlelight. There was a shimmer in his eye. His skin beautifully glowed as though he had lived at the beach his whole life. His nose was not very distinctive but it was slender and pointy. The candle sent a dark, long shadow of his nose across his face making me giggle. His hair was shaggy and light

"When I pointed to him his palms slipped slightly, leaving greasy sweat steaks on the wall, and he hooked his thumbs in his belt. A strange small spasm shook him, as if he heard fingernails scrape slate, but as I gazed at him in wonder the tension slowly drained from his face. His lips parted into a timid smile, and our neighbour's image blurred with my sudden tears.…

I ran upstairs and I grasped the cold gold of the pocket watch, and lifted the cover. Hidden in the top, an image was revealed as light illuminated the paper. My son, head was revealed first. His short cropped hair, dark brown, yet it seemed to glow. Next was my wife. Her angelic face still looked incredible even on the weathered paper. Her long hair kept in that ponytail she wore so often. Staring at the image, a single tear, as lonely as I am now, rolled down my cheek and past my lip. It then fell through the air and landed on the paper, leaving a drop sized mark on the image.…

It wasn’t the soft, ethereal glow of dawn’s early light peeping through the ill-fitting curtains that gently lured Tom from a restless night’s sleep. It wasn’t the promise of a new day, free from the nightmares that still plagued his tortured mind or the pleasing chirrup of the house sparrows greeting the sun with their morning song of joy. It was something more physical, something visceral, an inherent perception of a long-forgotten pleasure slowly rising from within.…

She smiled and I took her hand. I took her hand, and we started dancing. People gathered around us to watch, dozens of men stared mindlessly, letting the peaceful music and our joyful dancing wash over them. We danced, forgetting about the people surrounding us. We danced, forgetting what home had been.…

So often in relationships we find the smallest idiosyncrasies or characteristics charming at first. However, after the initial “honeymoon phase” these characteristics cannot be overlooked any longer. This is especially evident in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story, “The Birthmark”. A man named Aylmer is no longer able to overlook the birthmark that was bestowed upon his wife, Georgiana’s, cheek. Even though the mark was small enough to be covered by two fingers, he was not able to allow it to disrupt the utter perfection of the rest of her face.…

Gone was the quick, flashing eye that irritated my sensibilities and quickened my heart when we were younger. Her beauty had faded into a shadow of her brilliance during those winter nights in society. That evening on the hallowed grounds of our meeting place, she picked her steps slowly, content to leave her hand in mine. Her gaze was melancholy, solemn. They were worldly eyes. They had seen a darker side of existence.…

Max and I quickly huddle around a fire that the soldier has created from some wood in the shed. I look at his young, now hardened face. His blue eyes brighten at the sight of fire. I sit there thinking deeply, completely mesmerized by the glowing orange inferno, thinking what happens next. I collect all the facts. Max doesn’t have a mother to look after him. Sixpence I promised Tia I would look after. I looked at billy his face looked weak from the adventure and the responsibility he had taken on looking after us. The soldier took a chair opposite billy and warmed his hands up to the fire. He was reasonably built with a golden tan but his face still showed all the war he had endured. No one spoke I hated the silence it was like a single painting in a huge blank white art gallery.…

While walking to the café I noticed someone unusual, someone I have never seen around the school. This man was about 5, 10”inches, scrawny frame, unusual haircut, and he was dressed in all black as if he was on his way to a funeral. As I walked by the man I took a good look at his face. I recognized at first glance that the man had silly mustache. The mustache had reminded me of an old Amish man.…

Upon arriving along the shore, the oceans many qualities enlightened my senses. Immediately, I felt the cool ocean breeze caressing my skin. Driving along the sandy beach, I was awestricken by the suns brilliant fire as it as extinguished by the oceans horizon. Off in the distance the oceans waves marched in unison towards the shore. Getting out of the car, the sight of fires illuminated the crowds of beach patrons from a far. After all, beaches are famous for their bonfires at nightfall. The distinct smell of burning paper and wood filled the air. We found a secluded spot with a vast open space containing a fire pit; immediately we started our bonfire. Due to continuous resistance from the wind, starting our fire was a grueling endeavor. After a long and perilous battle with the wind, we finally ignited the fire. At first, the smoke and heat were dense enough to make breathing and seeing difficult, but we soon adjusted. With my eyes closed, I felt a soothing sensation surge through my body as the warmth of the fire countered the bitter chill of the night. For that brief moment, that crackling sound of the burning fire wood was all that…

A glow of shimmering light had appeared displaying a much peaceful yet a long stream of light, that seemed to shine longer than it has ever before. I have begun to wonder why is my neighbors' skin and hair darker than mine? Why is my hair and skin much more lighter? I relaxed in the living room of my parent’s two-story colonial home watching the football game and playing games with my siblings, the mouth-watering smell of a homemade Thanksgiving dinner fills the air. Every room in the house was intoxicated with this sensationally delicious Thanksgiving aroma. When dinner is called upon, the shuffling footsteps of my famine family can be heard miles from the house. As we all gather around the long rectangular oak wood table, covered in a crème colored cloth, a sudden warm, content feeling is felt. The lighting was dim, but the presence of each other’s faces light up the dining room.…
