leads into the unknown of what they are going to do in life it is important to have desire. A profession that involves something one is passionate about is what ultimately puts income on the back burner. According to Harvard Business Review an article by Leonard A. Schlesinger states, “When you’re trying something that’s never been attempted before… beginning an unusual project at work, or trying to get a new business off the ground… you’re going to face a lot of obstacles. You don’t want to be giving up the first time you encounter one”. Schlesinger emphasizes the effect of choice. When one chooses a job for income and not interest they face more obstacles. In life nothing comes easily, but being close to the job status one wants is better than a job just for income. When one struggles with a task it is easy to give up, this essentially saying when one is passionate they continue to work. Being in a career close to your interest leads one to more opportunities and chances to see what else is in the world. Schlesinger makes it obvious trying something new and uninteresting can cause one to give up. In order to have a better quality of life one must be content with their career. One might say it is necessary to chose a career on income, yes this is true but there are possibilities to be closer to one's interest not just salary. Not only does interest create a pathway for other interests it creates a sense of comfort and happiness. Most of the world believes money buys happiness, this is not necessarily true. Up to some point money can boost one's emotions, but eventually it stops. As stated in “Six Things You Must Know About Money and Happiness” by Amanda MacMillan she claims, “A 2010 Princeton University study found that emotional well-being… defined by the frequency of emotions like joy, anger, affection, and sadness… Beyond that, people continued to rate their lives as more satisfying, but they didn’t seem to experience any more happiness on a day-to-day basis”. MacMillan states that money has an effect but not all of the power. Here proves money is not the only factor of happiness. Many other factors contribute to daily life. Once the point of career can economically sustain your life the money does not matter. Emotions tie in clearly with happiness. When one has a job they truly dislike it will obviously make them disappointed. Beyond money, people continue to live their lives based on their emotions towards what they do. Income is important in life, but should not be a deciding factor in a career. Choosing a profession that truly makes a person happy, lead one to more connections and have a desirable life.
A profession that may help one economically, ultimately creates excessive amounts of stress forcing one to make life decisions.
In some cases a job based on income in necessary, and has the effect to make one feel accomplished. These type of careers over take their intended purpose for the salary. The stress of making money starts to build up and eventually make one lose what they once had. The stress is even stronger when one does not enjoy their job. Not enjoying the job makes the stress worse because they must continue to go to a job they have no interest in just to make enough money. Not only does a job for income create stress, it starts to overtake one’s life. In the novel, The Perfect Storm the author states a true scenario about a man losing his family over his job. Describing the job of a fisherman trying to support his family ultimately leaves him alone, “If it was hard on the men, it was even harder in the women… I did it for a long time before I eventually divorced him” (Junger 15). The ability to provide for oneself and their family is a reason for choosing a career. Although this may seem important and is it can turn a life for worse in the long run. While making money the man in the story loses what really meant the most to him, his family. A career should not depend on the money one receives because in the end people look back and see how happy or unhappy they were. For example in the Perfect storm the man choses the job for money to help his family, but in the end he loses his family. Choosing a job based on interest leads people to better and happier qualities of
life.
In conclusion money and interest seem to be the two biggest decisions in choosing a job. Both are very important, but interest must outweigh income. It is most important to think about interest towards a matter because it opens up to more opportunities and creates a happy secure mindset. While society seems to think income is the only thing that matters it comes down to what makes you happy in life. Money can buy happiness up to a certain point. One must choose a job based on interest because money is not always the key to success.
