In The perks of being a wallflower, main character Charlie (no last name mentioned) writes letters to an unnamed “friend”. In these letters Charlie describes his experiences as a Freshman in high school and at home. He is constantly trying to better understand the people around him and why they do what they do - particularly how they present themselves in public. Charlie is a loner, but he also is understanding/non-judgemental, thoughtful, kind human being.
Charlie is a loner. Charlie has mostly always been a loner. In the beginning of the book Charlie didn’t have any friends, since his best friend committed suicide, every one kinda stopped talking to him. Nobody wanted to be friends with a kid who was friends with the kid who committed suicide, he only had his siblings but they didn’t talk to him much. This is followed up by the statement, “ It was very lonely because my sister is busy being the oldest one in our family. Charlie would almost always cry over the simplest thing. Charlie was crying because a kid named Saun was going to give him a “swirlie” which is where someone sticks your head in the toilet and flushes to make your hair swirl around; Charlie told him to stop, then Saun started to punch him, Charlie then went to hit him in the knees, throat and eyes; Charlie felt so bad about it he started crying, even though it was in self-defense.
