The Piagetian Task
The two students I did the Piagetian tasks with were Nigel age 6 and Joey age 4. The setting of the tasks was at Nigel's house in his dining room on Saturday February 20th 2016. The two tasks performed were task number one and task number four off of the Piagetian tasks sheet handed to us in class. For task number one I took each child aside separately, but both children were shown an example of the picture held up for them to see the elephant right side up or standing straight up on its feet or upside down in which the elephant was on its head. We discussed that the seeing it right side up means it's standing on its feet and seeing it upside down means it's standing on its head to avoid any confusion if a child didn’t know what that meant. Again I started with Nigel and we spent a little time to make sure the balls were the same size. When we finally agreed that the balls were the same Nigel watched as I rolled one into a snake which was very exciting for him because that's his favorite animal and he really wanted to play with it but I had to tell him not to touch it until after I asked my question. I then asked Nigel is there more playdough in the snake and pointed to the snake playdough, is there more playdough in the ball pointed to the ball, or do the snake and the ball have the same amount of playdough. Nigel first looked at both for about a second before telling me the snake was bigger. I then asked him why and he then sat up on his knees on his seat and leaned over and he and put one hand at the beginning of the snake and one hand at the end to measure and then moved them to the ball which took up less space length wise and said that the snake is longer and that it is an anaconda because they're really big

    I worked with a six year old little girl named Lyla. When I asked Lyla “What holds the sun up in the sky?”, she replied, “nothing.” When I asked her “Why do trees have leaves?”, she replied, “I don’t know.” When I asked Lyla “Why does it rain?”, she replied, “So we can have water, duh!”. In the conservation of liquid task, I place two clear solo cups on a counter and I filled them equally with fruit punch, I had a clear empty vase on the side. I asked Lyla, “Do both cups have the same amount of punch in them?”, she replied, “Yes”. I then poured the punch out of one cup into the vase, as Lyla observed. I then asked Lyla, “Does the vase have the same amount of punch as the cups?”, she said “NO!”, I then asked why, and she replied, “The vase has waaaaay more because it’s taller, and it gives it more.” I then poured the punched in the vase back into a clear solo cup and I asked Lyla, “What about now?”, and she said, “Now it’s the same again!”, she thought it was really neat! After this experiment I did the conservation of number task. I placed two rows of ten skittles in front of Lyla. The skittles in both rows were exactly the same, they had the same color, size, shape, and distance apart. I asked Lyla, “Are both rows the same?”, and she replied, “Yep!”. Then I spread one row of skittles out so that it became longer than the other one. I asked Lyla, “Which row has more now?”, she pointed at the longer one. I asked, “Why is that?” and she responded, “Because the bigger one always has more!” I am not a firm believer of Piaget’ stage of preoperational thought. Some children have different personalities and different environments, which cause them to act and think different. Lyla has an eight year old sister that influences her greatly, Lyla usually copies her sister and has a more mature personality for her age.     Bring over the prepared ball on a tray. State, with a globe you can only see the side that is facing you. I am going to show you how you can see the whole earth at one time. Compare the prepared ball and the globe, they look alike. The ball has been previously cut in half, from pole to pole through the Atlantic and Pacific ocean leaving the continents complete and taped together with clear tape. Remove the tape, placing the two halves side by side. Now we can see the both halves of the world at once. If possible make small cuts at the edge of each half so that it can be flattened to show how maps were made. Introduce jigsaw puzzle map.
