The young adult novel “The Pigman” was released in 1968 and enjoyed immediate success. The author, Paul Zindel, was born May 15 1936 in Staten Island, NY. He wrote 40 stories, and composed 8 screenplays.
John and Lorraine attended Franklin High School in New York City. Both are sophomores at their high school. Around 1968 is when this story takes place. This story also takes place in the adjacent blocks from both Lorraine and johns houses. The characters frequently visit Baron Park Zoo and Mr. Pignatis house.
The moral of this story is that adults typically aren’t all that bad. In the decade that this story takes place, many children were distrusting of their parents. At the time of the 1960’s the Vietnam War was going on and teenagers were getting riled up about it. In this story both john and Lorraine have parents that don’t really provide the help that john and Lorraine need. John’s parents don’t really care about him, to add on, Lorraine’s mother is overprotective and cares more about how boys will treat her because her own husband left her. I believe that all children should have decent parents and be respected by them. John and Lorraine do not have decent parents who care for them. This book also serves a purpose. I believe that the books purpose is to inform readers about how we need decent parents.
My favorite character I the book is the pigman. The pigman is my favorite character in the book because he finds friends and things to do even though he is very lonely. Mr. Pignati finds bobo and john and Lorraine. Even though it seems like he would just give up and die, he finds a way to have fun even though he is lonely.
