The Pipell: A Narrative Fiction
She didn't even get to finish her sentence as her arms pushed her body forward, slamming them into Josh. Her friend let out a surprised sound as he stumbled backward. “Lila!” Josh screamed as he slipped. He was at the edge of the cliff now, barely centimeters away from plummeting to the bottom. Water and mud gathered around his boots as they sunk into the wet ground. Crack! Another loud sound echoed through the night air as Josh looked at Lila with pleading eyes. He knew what was happening. The corner of the cliff was breaking off because the rain was eroding the soil. Yet, she didn't step forward to help him. Lila’s entire body was frozen. Not even her mouth could move. This couldn't be happening. He couldn't fall, he just couldn't! …show more content…

Lila fell backward onto the ground and closed her eyes. It was just a spell. Thank God, it was just a spell. Her eyes opened again as she pondered about it. “I know what you're thinking,” said Cece. “It isn't a spell you would know.” Sitting up, Lila said, “But there are currently only four spells using Esoteric magic.” She stopped to think for a moment. “I think they are Manakinesis, Summoning, Animating, and Binding, so you couldn't have been using any of them!” Cece laughed at her. “Darling, what do you know about Binding?” she asked Lila. Wiping her tears off of her face, Lila thought about her answer. Binding was one of the four Esoteric spells known to witch and wizard kind, that was for sure. It was often used in the Middle Ages to acquire newly found Dark magic. It bound something found in the Esoteric realm to the human host, granting them new magic abilities. But the ability was always a different form of Summoning, binding the host to an Esoteric creature, granting them the manifestation of it. This would mean that if a witch or wizard performed a Binding spell, they would end up casting a powerful Summoning spell, which was usually only used on Earth animals and forming a bond with an Esoteric creature, having full control over its …show more content…

“It's sort of like an extra Dark magic version of a Summoning spell.” Cece smiled widely at the young girl. “Ya got it! That's correct!” Her eyes twinkled with enthusiasm. “But, is that all there is to it?” Lila nodded. She was sure this was all the Binding spell was. “Wrong!” Cece yelled out. “It's so much more!” She then stood up, walking around in circles and waving her hands around as she explained. “First of all, it gives the user new magic, correct?” Lila nodded. “But that doesn't have to be a Binding spell to an Esoteric creature!” Thinking about what she had said, Lila concluded she was right. Few people today practiced Esoteric magic, mainly because of the laws. There wasn't enough proof that the spell was just Summoning. Most of the Dark magic users were probably rogue or criminals. Lila didn't even know what Cece was. She merely looked like a normal witch, but her power was far too great for her to not have been noticed by

Evans-Pritchard insists that witches defined by the Azande, do not exist. But “the concept of witchcraft nevertheless provides them with a natural philosophy by which the relationship between man and unfortunate events are explained ...” (Evans-Prichard, 63). One early evening right before dusk, they were playing in the forest dressed as magicians with their black gowns and top hats using tree branches for magic wands, and as they waved their wands they saw a very strange shadow. This shadow was also surrounded by very bright light. Suddenly a voice began to speak; Elisa and Elizabeth were shocked and a little scared too. The echoing voice said “by dawn tomorrow you shall have real magic powers for the rest of your life.” The next morning the girls felt very strange but with lots of energy. They felt like they had a long restful night’s sleep and both couldn’t stop wandering about what they had experienced in the forest the night before. Did they wake up with magic powers? Was that voice of the shadow real? A few hours later, the girls went to their special place in the forest and played magic as usual. But there was something different about their game, every time they swirled and waved their hands with their magic wands their hands and arms would sparkle and glow. Elisa and Elizabeth felt thought something was wrong, they were scared thinking what was happening to them. The girls ran desperately back home and locked themselves in their room so grandmother wouldn’t hear them. Additionally, witchcraft for the Azande people provides a sort of an outlet to ‘channel’ their negative, pessimists thoughts and emotions; for example: hatred, envy and bitterness. Similarly to theology and religions in the Western society, witchcraft produces a sort of support and comfort for the Azande people. For example, it gives them a simple, clear and plain reasoning to explain despairing, mournful events and misfortunes and other tragedy. As the famous Marx quote goes: ‘religion is the opiate of the masse.’ For the Azande society, witchcraft is what relieves and cures the sorrowful thoughts and emotions following tragedy while also serving a control and power over the Azande people; teaching and allowing them to discipline themselves…

They had to be careful when footing because they could not even see their hands as it was so dark, taking each step with care otherwise it could be their last. The rain pummeled them against the cliff face, it made the journey even worse as they were fleeing from the Black Sould. Not even five foot from them, lightning struck the ground leaving a black patch of ash from where it disintegrated the surrounding brush, thunder split the atmosphere in two causing the unsteady rocks above to lose balance and come crashing down narrowly missing the two. Once the rocks had passed Dabbley gazed upon the mountains searching for any other loose debris, but before Dabbley could react a small stone hit him in the face forcing him to lose control of his footing, slipping on the moss coated stone. Before he could even comprehend what happened he was plummeting to his death. In a split second Ishka reached out for his hand clamping onto his arm lifting him from certain death. Juddering, struggling to lift her companion from death, she swings him from left to right until finally he is able to pull himself up. With a grin Dabbley sarcastically says "well, that was interesting we should do that again sometime." Ishka laughs under her breath before saying "I can't…
