pride of this great nation, which is seen by high profile athletes kneeling during the national anthem. My obligation to America is to pledge my allegiance, to honor those who protect it, and to respect the laws put in place for my benefit.
Many people ask why we say the Pledge of Allegiance.
The Pledge of Allegiance is a symbol of our country that represents the cost paid through the sacrifice of many brave souls. There are some groups who do not want to say it because they think it is an act of idolatry to say a pledge to a physical object and to state that we are one nation under God. The flag is not what we are pledging to as much as what the meaning behind the flag represents. The flag represents perseverance, justice, the states, and the freedoms that we have. No American should take this symbol of our country in any disrespectful way, such as burning it in protest to our country. "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for …show more content…
all."
The National Anthem is another symbol of our country. It is a song that was written while Francis Scott Key was being held captive on a British flagship in the war of 1812. Key wrote down his thoughts about the flag that was still standing after warfare. We should sing his song with national pride rather than kneel and refuse to respect the flag due to protest. There is a line between making a statement and being disrespectful. How can we teach the next generation about the responsibility of being a United States citizen when the people with the most influence have absolutely no respect for those who preserve and protect our freedoms? Colin Kaepernick is a famous quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. On August 26, 2016, Kaepernick did not stand for the national anthem to show how he felt about racial oppression. He was not ashamed of what he did because he thought it was right. Him not standing started a new “trend” of not standing while the National Anthem was being played.
Many other athletes started to follow in his movement from all over the country.
On September 7, 2016, in Montgomery, West Virginia three athletes on the West Virginia University of Technology’s volleyball team mimicked professional athlete Colin Kaepernick and knelt during the national anthem. These girls, in an attempt to show their beliefs, crossed the boundary between standing for what they believed in and disrespecting the country in which they live. It is not only disrespectful to the country but also discourteous to the brave men and women who served our country. Many people die every day to preserve the rights given to us by this great nation, but we take for granted the rights that we have been given because most do not know what it is like to live without these rights. There are many other examples of other athletes disrespecting the Anthem. Professional athletes need to use their resources to educate American citizens about the equalities of life, not by disgracing the flag and the anthem which represent unity. This accomplishes the opposite of what they are trying to do. Instead of all life mattering they are perpetuating a racial division within our
country.
Parents, teachers and the community need to educate children on citizenship, national pride, equal rights, respect, and religious matters. It should not matter the race or ethnicity that a person is. Everyone has equal rights in the united States. Until we, as a country, dismantle racial tensions there will be no respect for each other and the citizens will not carry out the responsibilities that they have. If professional athletes would use their influence and resources, perhaps the next generation of young, impressionable citizens would renew a spirit of love, peace, justice, unity, and civil responsibility. By working together, our country could be unified as one nation under God.
Within the last five years, the media have reported several instances of police brutality involving white officers and black people. This has caused a significant amount of racial tension in our communities, states, and the nation. When these issues arise, often times, citizens feel the need to riot, loot, and destroy personal property. They set fires, destroy cars, and seek to harm police officers and innocent people. In 2016, Micah Xavier Johnson opened fire on police officers, after a peaceful black lives matter walk. In the end, he injured nine police officers and killed five police officers. Other civilians were also injured. It was later reported that his motive was to kill white people, especially officers. This incident is considered to be the deadliest attack on police officers since our country was attacked on September 11, 2001.
Andrew Jackson said, “Every good citizen makes his countries honor his own and cherishes it not only as precious but as sacred. He is willing to risk his life in his life in its defense and is conscious that he gains protections while he gives it .” Police officers risk their lives every day in the communities where they live, and our military personnel risk their lives daily not only on our soil but all around the world. The military does more than just fight, they also help with security of embassies, disaster relief, medical assistance, and rescue operations to name a few. One of the purposes of our military is to prevent war and to keep us safe. If we did not have a military our freedoms, safety, and security would be at risk. Too often, United States citizens take these liberties for granted. We should never forget the price that is paid through the bloodshed of our beloved soldiers.
Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines law as “the whole system or set of rules made by the government of a town, state, country, etc.” But the law is so much more than just a set of rules. Laws provide a structure for civilized society by establishing standards of behavior for its people and defining consequences for failure to live up to those standards. Good laws are never a burden for good people. Unfortunately, not all laws are good. The laws of a nation speak volumes about the character of its people. If the character of a nation loses its anchor in morality, the laws of that nation will become unjust, placing a great burden on all of its people. Responsible citizens must obey just laws and use every opportunity to change unjust laws. This is every citizen’s responsibility, but especially that of those who serve the people in all branches of local, state and federal government.
The laws of the United States are tested against the U.S. Constitution and rooted in the moral law of the Judeo-Christian principles of morality. These principles have stood the test of time, bringing blessings of freedom and civilization to countless generations. They teach us how to behave toward each other, those in authority over us, and ultimately to the giver of the moral law. They are objectively true and bring prosperity and blessing to any nation who lives by them. Good laws are always a blessing to a nation, protecting good people from harm and encouraging all people to live in a way that builds the nation up rather than tearing it down. In the great wisdom of our founding fathers, our Constitution provides a way to test new laws to ensure that they are just, and to remove bad laws that may be passed. While we are responsible for obeying the law, we must also be informed and supportive of our courts as they test new laws. If evil men write unjust laws and the courts do not have the wisdom to stop them, every citizen will suffer. Good laws will protect all people from themselves and others. Bad laws harm everyone and undermine the whole culture.
In conclusion, citizenship is a great privilege, but it is also a great responsibility. It is easy to take the blessings of freedom and prosperity for granted, but if we are not responsible for supporting our government and holding it accountable, we have much to lose. My obligation to America is to pledge my allegiance, to honor those who protect it, and to respect the laws put in place for my benefit. Above all, show respect to not only the law but also the military. These patriotic people are brave and are ready to risk their lives. The military leads our country with their will to fight. If you see someone who has served in our military, tell them they are appreciated. The ones who protect us are the people who get the least praise.
