The PL’s role and leadership qualities
Both participants who were interviewed all pointed out that the PL was a person who really committed to her job. The PL was able to bring all her staff members to work collaboratively in order to increase the student enrollment of DCSM. Evidence showed that the number of students of DCSM has been increased since the year 2007 until now. We have our own marketing team, lead by Dr. Lim. We are given autonomy to go out from our institution to promote our IT programmes. We conducted talks, seminars, motivation camp and open counseling to Form Five graduates to introduce our IT programmes to all the secondary school students in Segamat areas. According to P2 in the study, the PL was a leader who placed a high premium upon her own professional development and the professional development of her staff. Most of her staff members were not from the teaching field, there were four teaching workshops had required by the PL to her staff to complete. Haha…I am happy, I had completed the 4 workshops, I really learned the ways how to teach students. After attending these all the workshops, my passing rates of subjects taught also increased a lot. (P1)
According to P2, the PL has no power to hire or fire her teaching staff because their institution is controlled by the main campus. Everything is centralized. Thus, the only way she could do is help her staff to self-improved. She had tried best to provide all the instructional supports to her staff members. The PL encouraged students to join any competition on campus or out campus. This was to enhance their learning. For the last few years, lecturers have keen the students of DCSM not been able to go for any competition. With the encouragement from the PL and the efforts of the lecturers, the students from DCSM be able to win prizes in the National Mathematics Competition organized by UTAR in these two years continuously. These were something that the staff members of DCSM never thought of their students’ potential, their students were becoming winners in national level. This is a very big turnover of DCSM in the eyes of top management. We guide our participants of the National Mathematics Competition, we train them by using our free hours, mock tests are given to students. Happy to see the results. We have continuous won for two years. (P2)
The PL always encouraged them to pursue their own goals for professional learning and evidences shown that at DCSM, they were two doctorate graduates born. The PL also facilitates opportunities for staff to learn from each other, peer teaching in order to improve their teaching and enhance students’
