A.E Stallings poem "Ajar" is about two people who are not speaking to each other after a fight. The poem has a very calm almost passive tone even though the couple is fighting. To tell the story of the couple the speaker uses rhymes. Each line rhymes with the next such as " Whatever the gods forbid, it’s sure someone will do, And so Pandora did and made the worst come true." In these two lines, there are two rhymes, the poem maintains that same rhythm throughout the whole poem.…
Stanford and University of California alumni Sandra Lim reads from The Wilderness on April 7, 2015, at Prairie Lights. As an alumna from the International Writing Program Lim was making her return back to Iowa City after 11 years. In The Wilderness Lim reads a collection of poems about love, spring and one poem that caught my attention was about the individual struggle of one's body within one’s mind. The poems are open to many interpretations but that is the way that I chose to interpret that poetry in particular. The interesting thing about Lim’s poem is how describes the body parts in some of her poems. It is very vague. It almost makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable but at the same time, I really like her style. The way she describes…

Released in 2007 on the album Nightmoves, Elling uses musical techniques to enhance the message of Roethke’s poem. However, in order to understand the reasoning behind the devices Elling has used, the meaning of Roethke’s poem must first be discussed.…
In Situations much like Richard Cory's, we as outsiders don't know how they are and what they are truly going through. It's one of the scariest things, one day we see a person and the next we find out that they're gone. We hear things like: ‘Oh she/he was such a happy person, they had everything.' But what we fail to realize is that everything is nothing when a person isn't internally happy.…
The poem “David”, written by Earle Birney is a very emotional and allure piece. The major theme that pursues throughout the whole poem is maturity. Which includes the beginning of such, and all the obstacles that must be overcome. The tone is a very cynical one, especially when David asks Bob to push him off the cliff. Birney also uses figurative language and poetic devices to create an element of tension, complexity and emotion.…
Often times in literature we find common themes, meaning the same idea can be conveyed by another writer. In Anthem by Ayn Rand and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury common themes of individuality, leadership, and broken societies that need to be rebuilt arise. As we see through reading Fahrenheit 451 and Anthem one must break through the norm of society in order to achieve true individuality, so they can become a leader, in order to rebuild a society which is otherwise broken.…

Icarus is a character in Greek myth. According to the myth he and his father fly with wings that his father made out of wax and feathers. They are trying to escape from a mean king. Icarus' father warns him not to fly to close to the sun or the wax would melt, ruining his wings. Icarus is caught up in the glory of his flight and does not heed his fathers warning. His wings fall apart and he plummets to the sea and drowns. The myth of Icarus appears to be fairly straight forward, and yet three poets write poems expressing three different perspectives using specific techniques. The three poets and their poems are Edward Field's "Icarus," William Carlos Williams' "Landscape with the Fall of Icarus," and Muriel Rukeyser's "Waiting for Icarus."…

In this piece, Alan Seeger uses diction, repetition, personification and rhyme scheme to relate to the reader that, death is not something to be feared, although it is inevitable and unpredictable. This gives a sense that Seeger sees death to be calmly be accepted and maybe likely. The poem is spoken by a soldier who knows that he or she may face death all around, and wishes they could avoid conflict but instead be safe in comfort. Death is personified in this piece with the use of the term rendezvous; like a meeting with someone you may know. As well as death, spring is personified, giving a stark contrast between the unexpected end of life, and the expected time of growth in the world. (“When Spring comes back with rustling shade… I have…
