Essay #3- Analysis of a printed advertisement

The Power Of Advertisements
In today 's society, successful companies try to gain advantage over their competitors by drawing potential customers to their products through advertising. One example of this process is the
Mott 's Fruitsations advertisement.
The headline of this advertisement reads: “Undercover Veggies Outrageous Fruit Taste!”, which is centered on the top of the page. Under the headline on the right hand side of the page, the sub headline reads: “ NOW WITH 1 SERVING OF FRUIT AND VEGGIES 1/2 FRUIT + 1/2
VEGETABLE”. Centered on the bottom of the page, the title reads: “ MOTT 'S Fruitsensations +
Veggies”, with the sub title “NEW” on the bottom left hand side of the page.
One important feature of an advertisement is colour. According to the article What Color Is
Your Advertising? How Color Theory Can Make Your Marketing More Effective by Mike Brennan, colour is “...pretty much the first thing your consumers will notice, making color your best - and sometimes only - chance to get a message across.” Mr. Brennan continues to explain that colour is
“...likely to have a psychological and physical impact on a viewer”. This advertisement combines vibrant, colourful words and images to draw the reader 's attention. Red, (strength, power, determination passion, desire, and love) yellow, (joy, happiness, intellect, and energy) and green (growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility) are the prominent colours in this advertisement. (Color Wheel Pro: Colors in
Action) Certainly if Mott 's had chosen to use grays and browns in their advertisement, the potential consumer would have been less likely to notice it.

The producers chose to use vibrant colors throughout the ad to make the motion picture livelier. Although the actors are not famously known, they distract the audience with the humorous script. By having the father and his friends dance around in puffy dresses, they make themselves seem childish and more relatable to younger people. The text in this advertisement is kept to a minimal, so that it will not overpower the main visual aspect. Only the slogan is shown to emphasize the importance of what this ad is really about. Bright orange and white are against a striking black to make the logo really stand out. All of these notable elements immensely help towards making this commercial engaging to the…

However, he did not give enough information about how to buy the fruits, which would have helped persuade readers to purchase them. While he gave precise information about vitamins and minerals in the fruits, he added unnecessary and inaccurate opinions about the tastes of the fruits and what he called “cool facts,” which were mostly neither “facts” nor “cool” (Lazarus 50). Plus, he left out some information and added too many other opinions. Details are supposed to support the author’s purpose, but not all of Lazarus’ details did. A key concept that he failed to define was “I.U.”; he assumed readers knew what that meant, but not all readers of Men’s Health are nutrition experts (Lazarus 50). Also, he assumed that readers would think his jokes were funny and that the irrelevant information would be appreciated by all readers. An implication is that more people will eat these fruits if they can find them. Another implication is some readers will stop reading the magazine because this was so badly written. Only one expert point of view was quoted, the author of an encyclopedia on fruit, but several of the sections had no quotes. How can readers tell where Lazarus got the details he…
