Although she was able to speak up about the discrimination she was facing, she also knew that if had happened previously, or happened again, the chances would be that the person of color would not have the ability to do so. She should not have had to show her money as proof of her class status, in effect, legitimizing her presence. That experience is had only by persons of color. White middle, or even lower class class people, would never have to show financial proof to support their actions or complaints. Having that defense lined up is a necessity for people of color who have money. One man, discussing facing discrimination, says in the situation “I might react in a number of ways – depending on where I am and how badly I want whatever it is that I’m there for” (Feagin 242). He has to make a decision whether or not he thinks the confrontation is worth the time and energy. The implication being that sometimes he lets it go because it is not enough of a hindrance to bother. The decision the man made is one that middle class people of color have to make all the time. They might have their resources, economically and culturally, but that does not always mean each instance is worth starting a
