The Pros And Cons Of Being Powerless

There can be no power without powerlessness. There can be no corruption without power. Whether that power is political, isn’t significant. However, whenever a person holds in their hands something that they never had before, corruption seems to become more of an inevitability rather than a possibility. Nevertheless, the root of that feeling, of something new, comes not from the power itself. Powerlessness is the root of the abuse as it is a sort of reimbursement, plus interest, for all of those times when a person could have done something or longed for, yet never had the power. Corruption can be a form of compensation, money and payback for past or current events. Powerlessness, not power, is truly what corrupts.

Corruption is the abuse of one’s power to one’s benefit. Power is the ability to influence people or events. Powerlessness seems to possess no place, but how can you abuse nothing? However, it is the act of feeling powerless that is the real form of trouble.
It can stem from little to no social standing a person has due to race, gender, or creed. It can grow out of physical or mental limits. It can fester, when someone pushes you from power, such in the workplace, in a campaign, or on the playground. Consequently, wherever it comes from, the person who experiences the feeling typically finds a way to create a balance, to feel powerful. Power, like powerlessness, is gained in numerous ways. Through position, promotion, or social standing, it only takes one idea to abuse it to do what they need, happen.

Corruption is common, and is found in several forms. But the root of the problem comes from powerlessness, not power. Power is just an ability while powerlessness it a feeling. Feelings stay longer than a term, event or treatment. Therefor, powerlessness is a force that lingers within a person or place for years to come.
