One of the pros of genetically modified organisms is how cheap the outcome is. Take the GMO based company, Monsanto, for example. The sole purpose of this big name company is to produce an unbelievable amount of seeds, genetically modified of course, and ship them to places with food insecurity. My opinion on GMOs is bias. I say that GMOs are good because they food is made and delivered quicker because if we the world was extremely against GMOs then the food you bought would last as long. The two articles I have chosen are both peer-reviewed and have two different opinions about GMO’s. The first article, titled “GMO’s and Global Justice” by Kristian Toft, is against the use of GMO’s, explaining how they are bad for us as human beings and for our environment. Her biggest concern is that we do not know the extent of what these genetically modified foods are doing to our bodies because of the lack of long-term affect testing. When trans-fats were first introduced, corporations battled to get them onto our grocery shelves. It is only decades later that this once novel food has been proven to be extremely unhealthful. Many people are against Genetically modified foods because of the unknown long term effects and environmental effects. There were concerns about how GMO’s can affect other animals. “ GMOs may be toxic to non-target organisms, bees and butterflies being the most talked-about examples currently. I found this documentary to be very interesting because it tells you about genetically modified organisms and the damages it can do to humans, animals and our environment. This documentary tells you that the companies that produce the genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are more interested in making money than worrying about the consequences of it making humans sick, killing animals, insects and how it is destroy the environment. The Institute for Responsible Technology has published a study on the effects of GMO fed rats. “1.8 Farmers report pigs and cows became sterile from GM corn 1. More than 20 farmers in North America report that pigs fed GM corn varieties had low conception rates, false pregnancies or gave birth to bags of water. 2. Both male and female pigs became sterile. 3. Some farmers also report sterility among cows.”(Web) Although human trials have yet to exist, the possibility of sterility is a scary consequence for a food. Another reported health problem was internal organ damage, “4.1 GM proteins may be misfolded or have added molecules 1. Proteins expressed in a GM plant may be processed differently than in the donor organism. 2. Those changes, which could include misfolding or molecular attachments, can be harmful in many unpredicted ways. 3. Current studies do not adequately test for these changes”(Web). In chemistry, there are hundreds of thousands of compounds such as proteins and amino acids, and every single compound has a very specific blueprint of molecules laid out to plug into the human body in specific ways. When this exact blueprint is not followed, it can lead to failure of proper digestion and absorption of these nutrients. A GMO can have a replica blueprint but if the nutrient is off by a single bond, it can mimic its original molecules structure but have the inability to properly plug into the digestive systems.
