“If an individual who has a known allergy to peanuts unsuspectingly consumed a genetically modified organism that contained the allergenic protein from the peanut, conceivably the individual would experience an allergic reaction” ("Ohio State University”). It is startling to know that in today’s society someone who is allergic to something like peanuts cannot eat many foods that have been grown around peanuts or that have been processed in the same place where peanuts have been. This means that farmers have to take extra caution of what they plant around peanuts. We already know that most GMOs are bad for us, and there are plenty of websites out there with information on why GMOs are bad for us and why we shouldn’t eat them. There are also ways to avoid eating GMOs such as “Buy Organic! Foods certified by the USDA as ‘organic’ cannot intentionally contain GMOs” ("GMO Education and Labeling"). Organic foods are one way to avoid eating GMOs but there are still other ways too. Like looking for Non-GMO Project Seals “Products that carry the Non-GMO Project Seal are independently verified to be in compliance with North America’s only third party standard for GMO avoidance” (“Tips for Avoiding GMOs”). When the consumer is aware and educated on the subject of GMOs they can avoid eating and using GM products.
Because some GMOs can trigger allergic reactions such as my example of how an allergenic protein from the peanut can trigger peanut allergic reactions. It is only right that genetically modified organisms should be required to be labeled. Also because genetically modified organisms are an expensive technology that some farmers cannot afford, GMOs should not be required for farmers to grow if they do not want to. In the future I predict that GMOs are going to be the only thing we will be eating but yet unlike today how they are bad for us they will be good for us and will not cause any problems to our
