The Pros And Cons Of Gun Control

Why does a society need to control guns? Gun control has always been a topic of hot debate. Shooting like the ones that occurred at Sandy Hook sparked a gun control craze in the United States (Gun control Sandy Hook shooting). Arguments were brought to ban assault rifles, universal background checks, and a ban on hi-cap magazines. While the mentioned arguments are strong, there are many flaws in these arguments. Gun control will not stop crime, responsible citizens can’t protect themselves effectively, and there can be acceptable regulations for guns. Gun control won’t work. Banning or controlling, whether what is being banned is an item or ideology, has never worked. Prohibition is a strong example of banning an item not working. In 1920 the United States government banned the manufacturing, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages (Prohibition, United States). In 1933 the amendment was repealed because the amendment simply did not work. Banning guns and certain gun accessories will produce the
Regulation pleases both sides of the argument on gun control. Those who support gun control are pleased since guns are regulated instead of being freely available. Then those who do not support are pleased because there is not a ban on guns and rights are not violated. Some examples of regulation for guns could include the need for a background check, restricting the sale of guns to those who suffer from mental illness, requiring of special permits for certain types of guns related to fully automatic and high powered rifles, and a mental evaluation for everyone to receive a permits. Now, those for gun control could say that regulating won’t work and still argue for banning guns, but the truth is, there would be effective manner to collect all the guns. The United States have the most guns per capita in the whole world (Number guns per capita). Collecting and destroying that amount of gun would be
