When you are under the influence of weed it dramatically raises your heart rate which puts you at a much higher chance of having a heart attack. Drugabuse.gov (2012) states “Marijuana raises heart rate by 20-100 percent shortly after smoking; this effect can last up to 3 hours. In one study, it was estimated that marijuana users have a 4.8-fold increase in the risk of a heart attack in the first hour after smoking the drug.” The reason why a heart attack can be caused by smoking weed is because when you smoke marijuana your heart rate changes and races when you’re sitting but slows down when you stand up and the sudden change can induce a heart attack. The risks of heart attacks are increasingly growing with people taking cannabis while they are intoxicated at parties which can cause strain on the heart. Parents and people say that ‘marijuana is bad for you, it gives you cancer/heart attacks/breathing problems…etc.’ but there isn’t enough evidence to say that it is really bad for you, the best that you can say is that it possibly could result in problems in the worst case scenario.
