The banning of something people enjoy only brings out the bad aspects of what one is banning. The depression rate for minors with social media is lower than that of those without it. Social media itself gives minors a way to vent their anxieties and stresses. This lowers their risk of them becoming depressed due to them not being able to socialize. The mental outlooks of minors also change as they become barred from using social media. A study by CNN showed that minors who had their social media accounts taken away from them become more reclusive, impulsive, and short-tempered. When minors aren’t allowed to use something that amplifies their social interactions their response to that banning is also amplified, especially in regards to their social interactions.
While allowing minors to use social media puts them I elevated risk of dangerous situations, banning minors from using it will cause those exacts same dangerous situations to exponentially rise. In banned or unindexed websites, the amount of solicitations that result in rape is 68% higher than those which aren’t banned. Since most websites that are banned or unindexed from the internet a carry higher risk of physical harm with them, there is no doubt that banning social media would carry the same effect.
The banning of social media for minors would only lead to an increase of secretive or dangerous situations, the rise in depression rates, and a decrease in social health for minors. Minors should be taught how to use social media safely rather than being banned from it for safety’s
