In Susan Jacobs essay "A first amendment junkie" she discusses the fact that porn is the worst type of freedom of speech. It is insulting to women to have to walk pass porn shops, perhaps she means strip clubs ect. She says that it is worst then child porn. truthfully anyone most be most be out of her mind to say that porn is worst then child porn or to compare it to a child working in the minds. Who ever believes that needs a reality check in facts.…
This is viewed as too broad and vague by the Free Speech Coalition. Under Miller v. California pornography can only be banned if it is considered obscene and without redeeming social value or rather if it would offend the average person. The problem with the CPPA was that even film and art, for example ideas produced centuries ago would be considered a violation. According to the First Amendment there is a difference between actions and words; although, certain categories of speech are protected especially those concerning children, those protected categories were not included in the CPPA. The speech used in the CPPA was not remarkable enough to persuade others to break the law; therefore, it cannot be banned. Because the language used was much too vague it was ruled that the prohibitions of the CPPA were overboard and…
The first amendment guarantees the right of free expression to all citizens of the United States. Leonard Pitt’s writing “Who decides if it’s art or porn?” brings up a major issue with the first amendment of free expression. Pitts states his thesis towards the end of his article with the two questions, “What is the line where obscenity ends and art begins? And who gets to say?” I’m not entirely sure about the answer to the first question, but I do know that the government and the judges of the court have the power to decide what the difference is.…
Although I don’t agree with most forms of censorship, I feel as if it is important in certain situations. For instance, television must be censored because all age groups watch it, and it influences younger children’s behavior because they have seen it on television. Not to mention anyone at any time can watch TV. Whereas censoring books is completely different. The reader has the option to read the book, making the author not reliable. Not just any age group can pick up a book and begin to read the content. But a six-month-old baby can sit in front of a television and be influenced by the action of a criminal. Certain things influence certain age groups and I feel as if books shouldn’t be responsible. You have to actually read a book; you cannot just sit and watch the pages. I feel as if censorship should appeal to only things that require it, and in my opinion, books do not require censorship.…
In "A First Amendment Junkie" Susan Jacoby argues that censoring pornography goes against the First Amendment. She believes that the First Amendment should be absolutely interpreted. She states that people will never be able to agree on what should be censored. She points out that censoring pornography will lead to censorship of other topics that need to be discussed and brought to attention in American society. She believes that pornography cannot even be defined as to what is “obscene” or what “art is”, and for that reason it can’t be censored…
On the other hand, it is also a homosexuals human and moral rights. Every homosexual has the right to be jubilant in the same way that heterosexuals are. Each individual has their own morals, although some may not agree. A USC Aiken senior, Micah Hurtt, says, "Some people cannot separate the religious aspect. It is not a matter of religious right or wrong morals; it is inequality." Even though heterosexuals have different morals, homosexuals still have the right to be…
An example of a First Amendment issue is the issue of pornography. Adult pornography should not be limited, the participants are doing this voluntarily and it is not hurting them. Kiddie porn, on the other hand, is very wrong. In a NY Times article titled A First Amendment Junkie,…
The first Amendment of the United States Constitution protects the right to freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom of expression from government interference. This is one of the most important amendments in the constitution and is what America is most proud of. However, these rights aren’t all they are cracked up to be. For example, censorship is very common and goes against the freedom of speech. Censorship has many different roles in society both in the past and present. In the past it was used as a way for dictators to control their people and keep them from reading rebellious literature. Hitler even burned all books that he did not like.…
There are some times where it is needed little, and also times where it is not needed at all. And even the times it is needed, it is not needed to the extent that it is used. There are very many ways censorship is bad for this country, and very few ways it is actually needed. Censorship in the knowledge of other countries, censorship from the government, censorship in technology, and censorship in learning are just few ways censorship is misused in the U.S. Everyone knows, as well as the pro-censorship believers, that censorship is misused in some areas. And that other areas it is not needed at all. Anyone that is pro-censorship knows well enough that it is wrong, the way it is misused. To close my argument i would like to point out the fact that pro-censorship believers have no real reason behind why it is a good thing, and cannot prove wrong that it is bad for not only children, but everyone in america. Now, i would like to resm my case by again saying to simply look into the negatives and positives of censorship, and see which one outweighs the…
The First Amendment to the Bill of Rights exists because the Founders of our country understood the importance of free expression. The First Amendment states "Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press . . ." (Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution 17). One of the ways the American people use this freedom of speech and expression is through the creation of the art form known as music. Music's verbal expression bonds our society through our emotions and experiences. This fundamental right of freedom of expression is being threatened by public and governmental groups who believe they have authority to monitor and decide what others should experience. The censorship of music lyrics is a violation of our First Amendment right, and public groups should not be allowed to bypass this right to censor obscene lyrics produced in the music industry.…
What is the difference between an action and a porn movie? They are both something you can rent, buy , watch , they both come in the same video formats. Thus the key difference that deferentiates pornography is its content – sex. Sex is something that is absolutely normal , and actually is the main drive behind the human evolution. Human beings are aware that except for reproduction, sex is also something that brings pleasure and is one of the basic human needs. Than what defines a pornographic movie is that first of all it is a movie(its format) and second of all it has content (sex). Therefore if movies are morally accepted in the society, and sex itself is also a normal event between two(or more) human beings , combining two “moral” statements should bring us a conclusion that pornography is moral. Pornography is a product of choice. The increased demand for pornographic movies is picturing quite vividly that people choose to watch porn on their own will, and thus there is nothing immoral in it. Pornography as a job is also usually a personal choice and thus in the whole process of creating an adult movie all the parties are willingly consenting to participate , which again is not immoral because every person is entitled to the right of his or her own body.…
Have you seen people sharing explicit photos, videos, texts, or other media about themselves with others online, over the phone or e-mail? This is what the new age calls sexting. Smart phones coupled with easily accessible technology and media result in sexting. This is an activity that 1 in every 4 teens indulges in and a number of adults enjoy. At times it just helps relationships heal themselves or gives them a more romantic turn, or else it ruins them when sexting takes an obsessive, uncomfortable turn. Let me cite a few scenarios where sexting seems helpful or more enjoyable:…
Our culture should not have censored material. I think that if you have censored material it is hiding away part of the real world. Keeping controversial and upsetting material away from the public eye promotes ignorance and stupidity, but I feel that sometimes there should be limitations for the comfort of others. Overall, people should become more open minded and except the fact that they are going to see or hear things they do not want to. I think if you do not like something, then do not do anything that has to do with it. In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury he shows that censoring material causes people to become lazy and not think.…
Censorship according to the Encyclopedia Britannica is "The Act of changing or suppressing speech or writing that is considered subversive of the common good." Censorship, therefore, undermines and is contrary to the First Amendment, which is intended to allow freedom of speech.…
Wikapedia needs to be better censored because it can give out false information to people whom may believe it to be true. Pornography websites have graphic images and videos that do not need to be seen by children. Censoring and requiring age restrictions on these sites would make it more difficult for children to access these inappropriate websites. Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter also do not have age restrictions, which is harmful to young children because of all the stalkers and sexual predators in today’s day and age. Censoring regulated by the government to give the people the opportunity to vote on what they want censored could greatly benefit the well being of all the United States citizens especially…
