The health of the slave depend on the master. Some masters would take care of their slave since they thought a healthier slave would work harder on the field than a sick slave. The slave’s shelter are usually wooden log cabins which can fit a number of slaves. Some masters feed their slaves while other don’t feed their slaves for days. This may result into a slave stealing food to feed themselves or their families. If caught the slaves will be punish or be flogged to death. Some slaves stole anyway knowing that they will be caught but they are just too hungry to care anymore. Even with these set back the slaves continue to work because they have no choice but to rebel or hope for the future.
Slaves used religion to pray for a better tomorrow. Slaves saw heaven as the end reward after their suffering. Masters Christianize the slaves, they were very picky on who they choose. Master liked to use Moses story as an example that the slaves should follow because Moses lead the slaves out of Egypt.
