The Pura Principle
Steff Tapia July 18, 2013

Formal Writing Assignment #1
At first I thought none of these stories related to me, but then I thought that maybe it didn’t have to be exactly the same, it could be parts of the story. So I started thinking of similar problems. At first it was hard because in my house the only problems we really have are things such as “who finished the milk?” “Who made this mess?” At first at didn’t think of one these problems because my dad doesn’t live with us. One of them doesn’t affect me directly, but it still affects really close relatives that I care about, they are my grandmother and dad. The stories I can relate to are “The Pura Principle” and “Everyday Use”. Like I said it differentiates very much but it has some similes.

The first one is “The Pura Principle” it relates to a problem my dad has with my grandmother and my uncle. My grandmother, no matter what he does, always defends my uncle and always makes things go his way. I really dislike that, so my uncle was a drug addict and my grandma has always helped him out and almost forced my dad to help him too. My dad has never been very thrilled with the whole idea but he thinks its better to not fight with grandma because she is sick, but he always says that when she dies he is going to kick my uncle out. Currently my uncle lives in the storage room of my dad’s veterinarian clinic. They never get along just like junior and his older brother, and it is for similar reasons too. My uncle thinks he deserves everything just because of the problem he had, and my grandma believes it too, she always make everyone feel sorry him and makes everything go his way. He goes to my grandmother’s house and makes her do his laundry and make him food. I really hope my grandma opens her eyes, kind of like juniors mom did, and realize that she is only making him worst, because he left drugs, but his new addiction is alcohol.

“Everyday Use” relates directly to me, I

How do you reflect life lessons taught to you and you use them in your everyday life? Well, Rudolfo Anaya and Judith Ortiz Cofer’s stories do just that. In Anaya’s story, he writes about how he grew up with his grandfather, working on land and learning about his ancianos. Anaya’s grandfather was a man with great wisdom and taught a lot about his background, he only said a few words, and was remembered mostly for his silence. In Ortiz Cofer’s story, it started off as a selfish young girl named Constancia giving zero respect to her grandmother. She later has a conversation with her mother, after the incident, that forces her to think about how she made her grandmother feel and why her grandmother was so upset with her actions. Constancia then…

Another short story that I found very interesting to read was, “Neighbor Rosicky," and the main character Anton Rosicky, who happen to be a farmer from Nebraska, and reflects his sense of values, when he actually finds out that he has a bad heart, then starts to experience troubling thoughts all about what lies ahead for his family given that it’s large, his wife, children, and the crops if he dies. Rosicky, then start to wonder about his big family, who will provide for them, will the children ever have a future one that was prosperous, liked he hoped and how would they cope with everything, after he passes away. He also starts to reflect back on his childhood as he was growing up, mostly the happy times. For a person like Rosicky, who is…

People’s behaviors can vary on the type of person they are. Some stories that help explain this are “Shaving”, written by Leslie Norris, “The Hero”, written by Margaret Jackson, and “The Stone Boy”, written by Gina Berriault. Each character in these stories has to deal with certain things in their life, and handle them in their own way. The stories also show how people learn how to handle these things differently, based on the persons personality and the type of event that is going on.…

I remember when we were little and my father was gone on business quite often, at that point in time is when we got totally separated that we could barely carry on a conversation as friends let alone family. About 3 months ago when my father got very ill and my wife and i came to stay with my parents we grew much closer again. He told me stories i had heard many times befoare and ones i had not yet heard. I discovered that the purpose of these legends is to be passed on throughout the generations, to be remembered adn to teach us a little something about life and ourselves.…

“A&P” by John Updike and “Araby” by James Joyce are two shorts stories with similar male characters. Both Sammy and the boy of “Araby” are the protagonists. During the stories, they each go through a conflict that includes heartbreak. Sammy and the boy seem disconnected from the male figures in their life. The two main characters have unrealistic expectations. Unfortunately, Sammy and the boy both have a negative outcome. They both learn that everything is not what is appears to be. Sammy and the boy are similar because they are both distant from the male figures in their life, have unreasonable expectations, and end up in a negative situation.…

The second story I chose was “The God who Embraced me when Daddy Disappeared”. The story is about a kid who grew up without a dad. His father was arrested when he was younger and never came back. Then, one day he passed away and the man told him everything and told him how God was his father and how he grew up without him. This story affected me by showing me that even if you don’t have someone in your life that you need, you will always have God. I liked how he was in a bad situation and put everything aside and put it in God’s hands.…

Texts 2 and 3 have very different points of view. Although both texts outline the bad things and the consequences of living apart together it is in very different ways this is done. Text 2 is about how it can both be a good or a bad thing for a relationship to live this way, and it is written in a more formal and academic language. Text 3 is a personal essay that is written with feeling. It shows only the bad sides of LAT and the language used is more negative and less formal.…
