More and more people in the US are starting to live separate from their partner, despite their strong commitment to each other. It is a way of living, which is commonly chosen by couples that have experienced a divorce or have children who they do not want to involve in a new relationship.
1. Explaining what ”Living Apart Together” is, and give an outline of the different views presented in texts 2 and 3.
- Living apart together is when a couple, despite their commitment to each other, decides to live apart in separate places. In that way the couples avoid competing against each other on for example work commitments and family responsibility, Rosemary Bennett writes. Although the majority of people who practices this way of living chose it because they “did not find themselves on the path towards cohabiting.” She writes. This is in most cases due to a previous divorce.
Texts 2 and 3 have very different points of view. Although both texts outline the bad things and the consequences of living apart together it is in very different ways this is done. Text 2 is about how it can both be a good or a bad thing for a relationship to live this way, and it is written in a more formal and academic language. Text 3 is a personal essay that is written with feeling. It shows only the bad sides of LAT and the language used is more negative and less formal.
2. Text 3 is a personal comment. How is that reflected in its tone and style? Give examples from the text.
- By the minute you start reading the comment written by Gary Picariello you get that a person who has a strong opinion on the subject writes it. The tone in the text is very sceptical and negative for examples he writes that couples live separately “Not even by necessity, but by choice.” His use of language is informal. He starts his sentences with “I guess” or “well” and ends many of his sentences with either a question mark or an exclamation point
