Literature is important for three reasons according the book; First books hold quality information. Secondly they require a time commitment, and the final and most important reason is we have the ability to react to our world based on what we as readers gain from the read material. The scary part is this book doesn’t seem too far-fetched from our world today! How close are we to a world without…
Read More >> Literature is a means to share knowledge & wisdom with others. Knowledge can't come from facts alone, as pieces of literature are meant to be interpreted in order to be smarter people. Foster's statement of how literature should give us a deeper life meaning is true, with stories such as "All Quiet on the Western Front", and Thoreau's "Walden", presenting life lessons and ideas from aspects encountered in our lives.…
In the short story “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara there is various examples of the functions of literature. It interprets the human condition by showing us the necessity of money. Money is always an important essential in life. Also, it instructs the human behavior by demonstrating of the importance of education. Ms. Monroe takes her time to educate these rude children, because she thinks it’s her duty. It also gives pleasure by giving me a sense of hope for the children.…
A literature class can also help a student do hard work to prepare them for adulthood. The philosophers I read about had different worlds in their head that could apply to the world around me. I was able to analyze and evaluate what they were saying, and now I can discuss how I feel about a reading or about the problems of today. This is why literature is important, and it should stay an important class until it is really necessary to discontinue literature classes. If we had to keep only one class for school, it will have to…
A literature program should provide entertainment for children, help children identify with their literary heritage, help students further understand elements of literature, help students understand themselves, and help students develop an understanding to reflect on what they have read.…
Francine Prose’s, I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read, proves many points about literature and the effect it has on students. I agree with Prose in such a sense that I believe students should read literature, not to get a better understanding of the “behind-the-scenes” of the story, or because it was assigned to them, but because they want to read it and that they will actually read the story thoroughly, understand it, and apply it to themselves and their life. I have taken English classes where the literature is taught effectively, in a annotative sense, and we have learned what to look for in a novel, story, or other piece of literature, to determine the position of point of view the author has on a certain topic. We studied the author and the history of the context more than the context itself.…
The question of what is literature and why we study it is a very difficult question to answer. This because there is no simple, or arguably completely correct, answer to what literature is. I believe literature is anything written down with the intent for it to be read by others for enjoyment or knowledge. The study of literature is important to us so we can try to get an idea of what life is like the perspective of the person writing the literature we study.…
Dana Gioia’s article, Why Literature Matters, is a very informative article, in which Gioia makes the claim that there should be an increase in the amount of literature being read. His main claim is that there is a decrease in literature reading, it would have a negative effect on the society. Gioia utilizes many facts to support his claims and a strong conclusion to let his readers wonder if it’s really important to be reading.…
The Literate Arts could be used for self-expression. The literate arts are good for clearly expressing an artist’s deepest personal feelings. Writers who have trouble bringing out personal themes can do so effortlessly using this form of art. To be a good writer, the reader must be able to identify with your personal feelings in your work. In The Dark Night of the Soul, Miller expresses his feelings about different ideas, beliefs, doubts and what other feelings he has. Though he shows his doubts on the power of the literary arts, he uses the literary arts to express them. Ironic isn’t it? We were able to understand from his text how these different questions troubled him. Self-expression has been seen to be a very useful tool in life. It makes one avoid harming himself or the people around him. Although Miller gave an example of the Columbine shooting where the shooters, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, were readers and writers of the literary arts and yet it made no difference in their lives, it doesn’t change my believe. He also added they even went as far as documenting what the felt before the shooting and why they did it but they still went about shooting people but I say that’s just an exception. In the movie…
Studying literature is very important and provides humanity with an abundant amount of social value, intelligence and a better approach with dealing with everyday scenarios.…
Literature is one of the main ways people express themselves through. The stories being written serve to make the reader think and finish the book with having more knowledge than they did going in. Literature is full of messages that help the reader realize there’s more to this story and what the writer is trying to tell them. That the words written down are more than just what they say, they were deliberately put there by the writer trying to get the reader to understand. Literature use of themes helps people connect more to humanity and themselves.…
Literature is important because it helps people live better lives by teaching morals, empathy and provides us with more knowledge of society and how it works. Literature provides a better understanding between what is right and what is wrong. It also provides consequences to wrongful actions. Literature allows you to read material that is written from someone else’s point of view. This helps to better understand other people and also helps us to gain understanding of our society.…
Reading can open one’s mind to the imagination of anything to be dreamt of. Poems, short stories, novels, plays, and dramas are all different types of literature that exist today. All of the different types of literature have their own ways and formats that they are written in. Literature has many ways of speaking to us as we read them, it can strike up emotions or memories that we have or it can make us rethink a situation that we are going through. I believe that literature can help a person open up through his or her stories.…
Literature has been an element of school reading throughout my entire education. I have never given a great deal of thought to the question, is it useful? Although I don’t always enjoy the material we are asked to read, it seems logical for it to be a part of our curriculum. I believe literature is useful in classrooms more than it is not of use. In my opinion, I think students should be exposed to diverse writing styles, be challenged with literature, and expand their knowledge as well as their comprehension.…
Literature played both a very important and a very unimportant role in my life. I loved it and I hated it. It made me proud of myself and it made me disappointed in myself. Writing and reading were not my strong suit in any way but I need it in my life and it continuously shows up and it will continue to show up the same way I will continue to need…
