The relationship between John, Goody Proctor, and Abby How do you think John Proctor feels in the play? John Proctor is the main character in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. The story is about the Salem Witch Trials that is taking place in Salem, Massachusetts. John Proctor is a person who has trouble deciding who to side with, his wife or Abigail Williams. In the play the relationship between Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams is really troubling for John. He is married to Elizabeth, but Abigail says otherwise. Abigail accuses Elizabeth and hurts John’s relationship. Abigail wants John all to herself, so she accuses Elizabeth.
John Proctor is being accused of witch craft, once act three rolls around. He is telling Mary to stop pretending with the other girls and saying she sees the devil. Then the judge asks John if he had connections with the devil, and John said yes he did. Then John gets thrown in jail.
John Proctor is now accused for doing witch craft and is forced to confess if he doesn’t want to be hanged. John says “I will not sign a confession, it is my name, you can’t make give up my name.”(Act4). Therefore he does not confess and is forced to be hung for not confessing. At the end just before John was hung, him and Sara Good and Rebecca Nurse started saying the Father’s Prayer, and then they were hung.
In conclusion John Proctors relationship was truly with Elizabeth and his two sons. He realized that Abby was just trying to trick him after committing adultery. John makes Mary confess to what happened but she turned on him, therefore John confessed to adultery, making the court put John in jail. John had the opportunity to live a free man again, but he had to sign a confession, giving up his last name and refused. He did that so his boys could live a life without being made fun of with their last
