The relationship between Prospero and Ariel is one of a master and a servant. In other words, a master is someone who controls and executes commands to a servant and a servant is someone who serves and obeys commands of a master. Firstly this paper will provide characteristics of Prospero and Ariel. Secondly, it will discuss Prospero and Ariel’s relationship in terms of a master and a servant. Moreover, it will discuss the relationship of these two characters in term of the duties done by Ariel for Prospero. It will be further elaborated in accordance to order of the scenes of the play. So, it will be discussed from the day of the tempest to the end of the play. Finally, it will draw conclusion to the relationship of Prospero and Ariel.
At first, the characteristics of Prospero and Ariel are difference. Firstly, Prospero is man who falls under human race, who was once the Duke of Milan and a prince of power. Therefore, he was betrayed by his brother a treacherous man So, he was cast out of dukedom with his daughter to an island where he found his zenith. Secondly, Ariel is a monster or a spirit who serve Prospero as his servant. So, Prospero uses Ariel as spirit to fulfill his desires. Therefore, Ariel is bound to serve Prospero until the mission is complete.
Moreover, Prospero is master to Ariel and Ariel is a servant Prospero. In other words, Prospero is like a master to Ariel and Ariel is a spirit which is a servant to Prospero. Therefore, Ariel shows total obedience to every command of Prospero in order for him to entail liberty. So, in act 1 scene 1 Ariel says to Prospero that he can fulfill every command he him” it can be to fly, to swim to dive into the fire,to ride on the curled promised Ariel that he will be free as mountain winds if do all points of his command. In this cause Ariel was subjected to Prospero and suppose do all the command to fulfill Prospero satisfactory. Importantly, Ariel play an important role in all the scenes where
