In the beginning of the book, Winston was very caution. He knew what he was doing would get him sent to the Ministry of Love but after he was with Julia for while he let his guard down. One they were finally could they didn’t fight. This showed that even they hated the government they were still products of the Party and knew better than to fight the Thought Police. While at the Ministry of Love they were tortured. During this Winston was told by O’Brien that he had to practice doublethink because that will be the only way he will survive. He wasn’t forced to double think but he didn’t have another choice because him not excepting doublethink because was what got him where he was. At the end of the story, Winston writes 2+2=5. This showed that yes, the Party was able to get into people's thoughts which Julia was admitted the Party couldn’t do. Orwell uses the process in which Winston gets integrated to say people in totalitarian society get their humanity taken from them. If they are totally devoted to the Party, only listen and believe what the Party, and feel nothing else they no longer have humanity. This is showed when Winston was holding out then when he finally gives her up his integration is done. This is also the point where the Party has won. They were able to get Winston to work in his own self-interest and not care about Julia, he will only care about the Party. In the end when Julia was also very different than how she used to be. Julia was how a woman in the Inner Party should be, she was no longer the sexual being she used to be. For Orwell, he is saying this is the point where totalitarianism has
