The Renaissance Artistic Time
The Renaissance artistic time period took place in the late 1300’s and early 1400’s. Their art is known for their religiously inspired art work and for their use of fresco and oil paintings. Some of the most well knowns Renaissance art work has revolved on Jesus Christ and the catholic religion. Their patrons were influenced by their own faith, humanity and even science. (Stokstad, 294). Nothern Europe was known for the Renaissance artistic period.
The Baroque artistic time was during the 1700’s and it originated from Rome. This time period is known for their very dramatic and emotional context within their art work. The catholic church and believes were heavily portrayed during this time period. The Baroque style was not limited to paintings, but were expressed in architectural art and sculptures as well. Paintings were very dark rich colors and did not have vibrant pastel colors. Rococo is also known as the Enlightenment time period and this artistic time period took place in the 1800’s.
Rococo style art is known for their political and scientific style art. This time period was also known as the time of reason, which is why the artist used their paintings as a form of advertisement for their new discoveries and views. The architecture and paintings were vibrant and included pastel colors in their work. The Renaissance time period was basically the rebirth of art, it was a period in which everyone was noticing their voices and felt the need to spread this new-found freedom with their artwork. The Baroque time period was heavily influenced by the reformation and the counter reformation of the catholic church, which is why a lot of their art work revolved around it. During the Rococo time period, there was a lot of change that was going on in this time period. Science was a heavy influence during this time period, as well as
politics.
The painting Double Portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and his wife by Jan Van Eyck (Renaissance), The Immaculate conception by Bartolome Esteban Murillo(Baroque), and An Experiment on a bird in the air pump by Joseph Wright (Rococo) All are very different, but they represent their time period perfectly. Jan Van Eyck and Joseph Wright use very dark and rich colors within their artwork. Van Eyck is doing a portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and representing his life that is filled with wealth alongside his wife. Joseph Wright’s painting is showing of a science experiment that was being conducted which was a huge deal during that time period. As for Eseban Murrillo, his painting is very religious as it represents the Virgin Mary and has very light colors all around the painting. It is very saint like and you can see the angels that are surrounding her. It is a very beautiful and enlightening painting.
