By:Hannah Baptiste 5/21/14 6. Westphalia was the first modern conference. (a) The Thirty Year War had began for mainly two reasons for political and religious causes.
This conference was needed because the Northern Europe was totally exhausted and the countries that were involved in the Thirty Year War included Spain, Poland, Netherlands,
Sweden, Denmark,Switzerland and Germany and when the war ended the most of the European cities was in ruins as a cause of the destruction of the war and needed peace for an attempt to settle their international problems and rebuild their infrastructure. However in 1648 Europe created Peace of Westphalia which created a status of balance that decided which state will
remain Catholic and which one will leave Rome without fear of Catholic intervention. Lastly, the
Peace treaty of Westphalia worked for almost 100 years in Central Europe therefore there was no brutal war among the European states this led to religious group not having to fear of punishment. (b) Nations try to settle their disputes today by with the help of the United Nations. The United
Nations goal is to prevent altercations from developing into war, or to help reestablish peace when armed conflict does break out. Furthermore to promote long lasting peace in societies emerging from wars. In addition over decades the United Nations has helped to end numerous conflicts, often their actions are through the
Security Council and their main goal is to is the maintain international peace and security. The United Nation also establishes peacekeeping operations in troubled areas in order to reduce tension and keep opposing forces apart and create conditions for sustainable peace after settlements have been reached. 7.”Prussia is not state which possesses an army, but an army which possesses a state.” The values I think would be emphasized in a such state is this means that the Military rules the State, rather than the the State Government ruling the Military.
