“If” tells the story of a father explaining to his son all the good qualities and characteristics that will make him a good man. He starts off by saying to be confident in yourself and your decisions, but do not think you are above anyone else. He tells his son it is okay to dream but do not let your dreams control your life and do not think without having a plan to put those thoughts into action. He also mentions to not be afraid to take risks and lose everything, and if you do, start over and do not tell others about your loss. He tells his son when you have been pushed to your limits physically, use your mental strength to continue to fight. The narrator starts off by telling us instead of filling silence by talking, to listen to our surroundings and our conscience. He says to treat others the way you want them to treat you and respect others opinions, as they too have their own journeys and obstacles.
