Utopia relies on the idea of communal property. Communal property is the idea that any one person does not own more than the whole and that everything is shared. In Utopia everyone does six hours of work, three before lunch and then three after. For the remainder of the time they are free to do as they please. Utopian work is the same for everyone, therefore eliminating any class system. In Utopia everyone works regardless of what sex you are, men however are delegated to the more physically demanding tasks due to a greater tendency to be stronger. “Nobody owns anything but everyone is rich - for what greater wealth can there be than cheerfulness, peace of mind, and freedom from anxiety?”

Coitus is prohibited until marriage if anyone is caught, they are not allowed to marry anyone forever. Females are allowed to marry at eighteen and then males at twenty-two. Divorces are only given out in cases of abuse or if their partner has committed adultery. Utopia does have the institution of slavery. Slaves consist of criminals, adulterers, captured POWs and individuals that were sentenced to death in another nation. Slaves have no freedom and are always bound and always working. It should be noted that the children of slaves are set free. The Utopian sick are taken care of very well, but in the cases where someone will die from their sickness their are encouraged to self terminate. They are encouraged to self-terminate because they are a burden on society. If they choose to live they are treated the same as before. Utopians believe to make the best out of all their traits. All religions in Utopia have one god, when Hythloday came to the island he spread the word of Jesus Christ which became quite popular on the island. The only religion the people of Utopia are intolerant of is Atheism. They believe that if you do not believe in the afterlife you will act selfishly and self interested.
