Dredd Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom, and he was told he wasn’t a citizen to begin with. It went all the way to the Supreme Court and ultimately, the judge, Taney, declared that slaves were never and could ever become a citizen and have the full rights as white men; they would always be property and their “masters” could see fit to do whatever they liked. It rejected the Missouri Compromise and Taney also believed that slavery couldn’t be prohibited in the Wisconsin Territory. The ruling, if upheld, would cause an uproar- Northerners were furious because it was allowing slavery in all new territories of the nation. In the eyes of the Northerners, Taney had sided with Southerners when it came to slavery. At the same time of this incident, an economic crisis became underway. The Southerners didn’t want to be elected so bad that they even took his name away from the ballot; the Republican Party was banned nor was the name even allowed in those states. Even their best attempts did not succeed, eventually Abraham Lincoln became the president. South Carolina succeed months later and brought the rest of the house with them too. Things would change for the Democratic Party, seeing as they had always ran things in Washington. The presidents from Jackson to Buchanan was either a Southerner or a Southerner sympathizer, which allowed the South’s needs to be catered to whatever they desired. For example, when Zachary Taylor was elected, William Seward was his “voice” in his ear. Seward made Taylor believe there was a higher law then their own, God, and God said to not compromise on slavery. Once Lincoln became president, he knew that he could nothing about decimating slavery in the existing states, but he knew he could control the expansion of it into new territories. Lincoln wanted the territories from sea to shining sea, from Canada to Mexico to become free with white, wholesome labor, besides the southeast which was dependent on slavery. Lincoln had also
