The Role Of Teenage Suicide In The United States

In the United States there's a strong concern about suicide dealing with young teens, adults in the early twenties, and mid thirties. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a federal agency involved in psychiatric research and treatment in the United States, has found an estimated one in 12,500 people between the ages of 15-19 can be expected to commit suicide. (Marcuvitz 14). People between the ages of 24-34 suicides the second highest cause of death and people between the ages 35-44 is the fourth highest cause of death (Marcuvitz 16). The (NIMH) shows that 219,199 Americans took their own lives in 1999. Most suicides were gun related (Marcuvitz 16). As many as unsuccessful suicides attempts are made for every attempt that is successful.
Women and young people frequently fail at their first attempt. Adult males seem to be much better at killing themselves on their first try (Marcuvitz 17). Older white males have a higher chance of committing suicide than females do (Marcuvitz 24). The rate for white men in 2007 was 13.5 cases per 100,000 population. For black men 5.1 cases per 100,000 population, and for hispanics they had 6.0 cases per 100,000 population. It was found out that people with lighter skin colors have a higher rate of suicide than those with a darker skin color (“Suicide Practice”).
