The Role Of The Nurse In Romeo And Juliet

In Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence and Juliet’s Nurse are solely responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Both of these characters, Friar Laurence and Juliet’s Nurse, play a critical role in this tragic play. There are many characters that could have averted Romeo and Juliet’s deaths, but most of the responsibility lies with Friar Laurence and Juliet’s Nurse. Everyone knows the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet. This play takes place within a three day time period in Verona, Italy. Romeo, a Montague, meets Juliet, a Capulet, at a Capulet party. It was love at first sight. These two young lovers’ parents are in a huge family feud that has gone on for hundreds of years. The feud has gone on for so long, neither of the families knows why the families hate each other. Romeo and Juliet are so madly in love with each other that they can’t live without each other. They can’t be separated so they decided to get married with the help of Friar Laurence and Juliet’s Nurse. Romeo and Juliet secretly got married because of their families. Not long after they were married, Romeo was banished for killing Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt. The only reason Romeo killed Tybalt was because Tybalt killed Romeo’s best friend, Mercutio. Romeo went to Friar Laurence because he didn’t want to be separated from
Meanwhile, in the middle of all this, Juliet’s Nurse interrupts Friar Laurence and Romeo’s conversation. Juliet’s Nurse now knows about the plan. After Romeo left Verona, Juliet’s father tried to convince Juliet to marry the Count Paris but Juliet didn’t want to. She cried to her Nurse and to Friar Laurence. Friar Laurence came up with another plan. He would give Juliet a potion that made her body seem lifeless, but she wasn’t dead. Juliet would take this potion so she would have to be buried, but once she woke up Friar Laurence would help her get to Romeo
