In the short story The Scarlet Ibis The older brother is an extremely harsh, selfish, and proud young boy, he compels and manipulates Doodle to overcome his disabilities out of embarrassment leading to disastrous consequences. For example, the older brother makes Doodle learn how to walk because he is humiliated about having a crippled little brother, the narrator even admits Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother.”(178) The older brother had absolutely no concern for Doodle s sake, he only pushed Doodle out of pure selfishness. The older brother knew extremely well that Doodle's condition prevented him from doing any physical activity because it could lead to death, but once Doodle became the narrator's responsibility
